Hey everyone, I got into snorkeling/freediving and spearfishing last summer. And frankly couldnt get enough. Unfortunetly the hurricanes cut into the prime season and I didnt get to go out much. I'm very anxous about this summer and really hope to go every weekend. I live in Fort Lauderdale less than 10 mins from the beach. I've got a minor problem of not owning a boat. I have a friend that has a boat but he isnt very reliable and I'd like to be able to go out more than just when its convienent for the boat owner.

I do have access to a an ocean kayak so Im looking into spots where I can just launch it from the beach.

My girlfriend has also recently started but she is not that strong of a swimmer yet. We went to the snorkel trail on Commercial and she was unable to make it to the bouy. I think this had more to do with gear than stamina.

I'm looking for some advice short of "go buy a boat" on how I can get more into my new favorite hobby.

Thanks!

Hi there mbs1177,
Welcome to ScubaBoard, I have to agree with the advice of Kraken, but no kidding.
Some margaritas would be cool too. There are plenty of divers here on the board from your area, they will be willing to help you out. Keep that beer cold.
David

btw: go buy a boat :D

Welcome to the board, and I hope this season is better then the last :D

Well for now, you'll have to settle for a fold out couch and 12-pack. But I do have almost a full bar. :)

Thanks for the welcome. See you on the boards!

We do have forums on underwater hunting and on freediving as well. I don't know much about either, but you'll meet a lot of neat divers who do. :hat:

Glad you've joined us. PM me if I can help you find your way around the Matrix.

Don't worry about stop signs and me, its BaitedStorm you have to worry about! Welcome to Scubaboard.
Just wondering about your girlfriend not being able to make it out to the snorkel trail, much less the bouy. Were the two of you on the kayak or swimming? If swimming, and she couldn't make it to the bouy, I would be very interested in knowing why, as it is a very short distance, heck in low tide you can walk halfway there!

Jenny-

Her problem was with her mask. She couldnt get it to stay on and make a firm seal. Water kept seeping in. She's tried a few others and now found one she likes-- mine.

We went back this weekend but again didnt get to the trail. We got to the bouy (actually over shot it) when at about 4:30 the sun went behind a large grey cloud. I thought it was about to rain. Also the water was very murky and without the sun I could barely see the bottom. We turned back and went for slurpies. A succesfull trip as far as I am concerned. Shes comfortable in her gear now.

We saw a bunch of crabs, a large starfish and some small baby jacks.
