Hello to you all,

I joined the forum today and want to introduce myself.

I am a PADI rescue diver. I live right in the middle of England about as far from the sea as you can get, so most of my week to week diving is done in a flooded quarry called Stoney Cove. Its about 5 acres of water that drops to about 130 feet in the deepest part. It has a wreck of a sea going tug in there as well as a Wessex heliocopter, and a few other things. It is a good place to practice and train in relative safty. In the summer the temperature rises to a heady 18c (about 65f) and in the winter drops to near freezing point. I do dive in there right though the year.

When I can I go to the coast and dive in the sea, looking at the many wrecks that there are around the coast of Britain and anything else that takes my interest. Myself and a couple of buddies are planning a trip to Egypt for a live-aboard holiday in the Red Sea.

So as you can see, we are not frightened of the cold, nor are we frightened of terrorists.

I'm getting a little grey round the temples now having first learned to dive in 1970 as a diver in the Royal Navy. I didn't go into the water for many years after leaving the service, but eventually qualified as PADI and got back in. I love it all over again.

I now have about 600 dives in total, about 400 the first time round and about 200 as a PADI diver.

I hope I have painted a picture of who I am and what I do, and look forward to conversing with you all in the future.

By the way, a Silkie is a mythological creature similar to a Large Seal that has the magical ability to take the form of a man when it is on the land. Comes from Scottish folk law I think.

Best Wishes,

Silkie.

Silkie,

Welcome to the Scuba Board. We have the largest membership of any diving Board in the world, so you can find fellow divers with like interests anywhere you go!

I had to laugh when I saw your description of Stoney Cove. It took me the longest time of reading other folks' posts before I realized that Stoney was nowhere near the ocean! :D

Glad you got back into the game! Moss-backs are always welcome here! ;)

Hiya..i am selkie and i am from the middle of England (now living in NC-USA). Originally from Nottingham. I am a newbie and getting my skills and gear together. Will be visiting 'home' in a couple of weeks. You're a tough nut to do those cold water dives!!
We have many wrecks here off the coast of NC where I live.
Drop me a line some time,
selkie

Welcome to the board. Come visit Florida and enjoy some 87-89f water.....

Welcome to the board!

Three or maybe four, of us are hoping to be there for my Birthday which is in February. We are planning to do a liveaboard.

I've heard that its a good time to dive the Red Sea. I have dived around the Middle East before but that was a few years ago.

Best

Hi Selkie,

I know Nottingham fairly well. I live in Leicester so not far away. I've heard there are some good wrecks off the East Coast, but never got there to see anyof them so far. I did dive a couple of times in Florida and that was awesome.

Best

Welcome, nice to hear from a UK person. I am a bit further "up north" from Manchester. My local dive site is a flooded quarry called Capernwray.

You will have a great time in Egypt, is your liveaboard out of Sharm? If so make sure you visit the camel bar on the last night.
