My father was a volunteer from South Africa in 1955/6. He fought in the Sinai War as a paratrooper. He was a member of Machal: Mitnavdim michutz Laaretz. Lots of stories.

Note that the Uzi has a wooden stock. Only changed to metal in the 60s.

Here is a page from his tanach that he received. Talks about Nachal and volunteering as a paratrooper. @Barak can translate better than I. Anyone care to guess who his Commanding Officer was in 1956? Warning: His Hebrew is fairly primitive.
