Hello fellow divers !! New diver and 1st post from Stratford , CT. Just returned from Dutch Springs, PA exploring sunken boats, trucks, a helicoptor and more. Great fun. Look forward to meeting other divers as well. I am currently reviewing the different gear for 1st major purchase and was interested in any 'Review' sites such as a 'Consumer Reports' equivalent for scuba gear.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome to the board.

Many views on gear. I now dive a steel backplate and wing. Many divers in my part of the world are migrating to this configuration. I wish I had done so from the start. Deep Sea Supply (DSS) makes IMHO a good product that travels well.

But you need to dive different configurations and makers and decide what is right for you, your current and planned type of diving (cave, wreck, recreational, deep [200+] or normal depths and in what climate you will be in (hmm Connecticut, Dry-Suit would be my guess unless you plan to fly a lot to warm water).

Dive Shop contracts with their MFG often restrict what companies products they carry. If they carry one brand their contract will normally say they cant carry certain other brands of dive gear. DM and Dive Instructors are often required to wear not what they really dive or prefer but what the shop sells and to only recommend that gear. So keep that in mind.

welcome aboard

Thanks for the info. I recently dove with a buddy who had the wing plate and strongly recommended it. I plan on going to Dutch Springs in CT possibly next weekend and understand they rent equipment. Hopefully they will have this to try.
