I spent Christmas and New Years in Chicago with my grand daughters. :D Fun time but wanted to dive. It was warm and no diving available. :( Thinking about coming up in late February. Are there any dive operators open or shore diving at this time of year? :coffee: With that great big lake just calling, why does anyone go anywhere else.

That time of year there will be no dive ops running. Most if not all are all bedded down by Oct. Wont start up again until late May. Shore diving depends on how the weather is running. as far as if it is iced over or not. Unfortunatly though there is very little to offer as far as shore diving in the Great Lakes. You take a boat to a wreck site and dive it. There are no pretty coral reefs or pretty tropical fish to see. That is the reason to go dive other places. Yes Wreck diving is Awesome but so is Reef diving in tropical waters.

Close but not 100% accurate for the western side of Lake Michigan. There is one boat still running occasional limited charters ... the Len-der out of Milwaukee. These are one dive trips, look to be very popular and do require serious equipment (drysuit required, air source redundancy required, etc.). Here is their web page about it.

All other boats are out of the water, but they do get back in a bit earlier than Ted indicated. Most boats head back in the water sometime in mid to late March.

Some good ops in the area include:
Capt. Dale
Len-der
Dive Chicago
N'Pursuit
Nordic Diver

They get out early over on your side, I guess. It is May before they start here. their might be some in the water In April Not sure I was just generalizing any how.

I think they're just hardier over on the IL/WI side. ;)

If you where here on New Years, too bad you didn't join us on the New Years Dive at the planetarium! Everyone's gear froze, but we had a good time! :-)
