Hey guys. I'm a "beginner diver" just because I have never gone for my advanced certification, that being said, I reguarlly dive in the Niagara River and around western NY. Some trips I have gone on were to the Gulf of mexico, Tampa Bay Area; I dove a natural, and then an artificial reef, and I gotta say, I love natural organic beauty, but the artificial reef, was far better than the natural as far as specie diversity goes. 1000 Islands; I dove the America, Vickery, and the Islander, all kinda deep wrecks. Great charter "Hunts Dive Shop" the guy's name is "Mo". He and his wife run the joint, kinda crazy folks, but they have a great boat. They are out of Clayton, NY.
Anyway, enough about me, this is what I need. I'm looking to get some equipment. I need a dive computer. I'm tired of the tables, I understand the principles, and the saftey issues with bottom time, surface interval, decomp times, so on and so forth, but I was wondering, What types of computers are good consumer friendly units. I know there had been a industry boom with these wrist mounted computers, but I'm not into that. I'd like it interfaced to all my gear. What brands are good, how about reliability? Contruction materials, functionability??? All very important aspects when deciding where to spend that chunk of change. I cant see myself breaking the bank for this, so if anyone has a used unit thay are parting with, lets talk...
Anyone else from the greatest region in the nation?? Thats WNY for those who dont know, sorry if I offend anyone who loves where they live, but I gotta tell ya, Western New York has everything you could dream of doing, except for surfing, but you can do some white water rafting...
Happy Safe Diving to all!

Buffalo, NY here too

I live on Elmwood Ave. and go to UB, and I love my Lake Erie :D

Welcome to ScubaBoard

I use a Darwin Computer, console mount. I do not care to much for the wrist version of anything. Although all my friends use hoseless wrist mounts. My computer is very easy to read and use, and for less than $100.00 you can get the infa red Iris that downloads it to a laptop or desktop and it shows your profile. Make sure whatever you get you get one that will do nitrox as well. My wife uses the latest Oceanic computer and she loves it. Also Aeris makes a great nitrox/air combo that has been around awhile and well proven. It may be the least expensive on the market and does everything a recreation diver would ever need.

Thanks for the advice. I was mulling about the nitrox combo, thinking i should get it now, so I dont have to get an upgraded computer in the next few years thus wasting money that I dont have ! Do it right and do it once is what my pops taught me. I like the idea of uploading to the PC to chart dives and keep records via that infa red thing. Does that Aeris unit have the downloadable capabilty? I'll have to do some market research on this, maybe durring the off season I can find a good deal...

Thanks!

Welcome to SB...I personally like the analog pres guage with a nitrox dive computer that way if the dive puter goes down it doesn't ruin my dive...:)...I allways log my dives the old fashon way, and and still keep up on my dive tables...I use Navy Tables and adjust the depth if I'm diving Nitrox. This is just the way I like you need to find your own way that works for you, but I would recomend you keepinng up on your tables. Just my $0.02...:)
