For me having a routine really helps, always do the set up the same way so you don't forget a step. Do the checks the same way for the same reason and keep your eye on the guages.
And remember to have fun!

Can't agree more with pasley & Alison. Remember that pre-dive, dive, and post-dive are all very important activities. Get a pre-dive routine down pat...one that you will not alter, under any circumstance. Your pre-dive check & buddy check should be very systematic, and always performed the same way. The dive....well, we could all write extensively on the dive....not enough room here. ;) Don't forget the post-dive review; what went well, what didn't, what you should improve next time. Without critical self-assessment & review of the dive with your buddy, you're missing a great opportunity to make yourself a better diver.
