I'm from Niag Fall's, and going to Montary Ca.8/1/04 . I think I want to do a shore dive I've heard the shelf is an excellent dive. I'll only be there a few day's , so any advice would be appreciated
Thank you
Mike

That's "Monterey" Mike.:-)

A couple unsolicited recommendations:

If you are one of those people that wears a big "Rambo" dive knife strapped to your leg (not that there's anything wrong with that) be sure to move it to the INSIDE of your leg when you dive in kelp areas. You don't need it hanging out there snagging kelp.

If you have never dove kelp before, don't sweat it. It is not so thick underwater. You just don't want to do the "kelp crawl" at the surface unless you have to. Best to return to the boat / shore submerged if possible.

Come enjoy some of the greatest density of underwater life in the world!

Advice about rambo knifes and spelling suggestions aside, Monterey is best explored with a competent guide for the first time. The water temp averages about 52 degress this time of year, and two piece farmer john wetsuits, hoods, and thick gloves are considered a minimum to stay comfortable. Many wear drysuits. Try giving Keith a call at one of the local dive shops - Bamboo Reef - 415-362-6694. He can arrange for a guide and provide you with any equipment you might need. A dive guide, for at least your first dive, is a great way to be introduced to the kelp, the environment, and the equipment you may need to explore it safely and comfortably. Hope this was helpfull.

Isn't there a "shelf" at Monastary...or at least a big drop off?

Monastery has a nice drop off, but it isnt really a shelf. If you're out there, you can swim along the slop down, its a rock wall that descends into the depths, but the side is sloping, so you swim along the wall, but about 30 feet below you, the slope provides rock below you, so you avoid the feeling of falling into the abyss. Also, I know nothing of the conditions you're used to, but Monastery can-although it has been calm recently-be a hell of an entry, with a steep sloping beach, decent wave action and loose gravelly sand. The benefit with monastery is that you can kind of skirt the kelp line, to avoid any potential entanglements.
