Hi. I am a non-diver who has been very interested to learn for some years, but not got round to doing anything. Now a friend (non-diver) is considering a trip to the Sinai in a month or 2, and I would love to go with him (for up to 3 weeks) and get the most out of the holiday. I have always enjoyed snorkeling though have never be good at diving down very far. I live in the UK.

My main worry is that I have 2 siblings who have tried diving and they both found it impossible to equalize the pressure in their ears (?). I feel I am more sensitive than most pressure changes, and when I fly if I fall asleep when we are taking off or landing I can get quite painful ears. I have always been able to clear my eustation tubes by holding my nose, closing my mouth and exhaling.

I am thinking about trying a taster session at a local dive club (they have a 3 metre pool). If I can do it there I will join and get in as much practice as possible prior to the holiday.

What does this community thing about my chances of being able to do diving?

How much am I likely to be able to learn at a dive club? Would I be aloud to use equipment and dive (perhaps in the shallow area only) as a non-diver?

What could I do if I got the basic certificate? Can I just hire kit and go out where I consider myself safe, or does that only get you a trip on a guided tour? I have no interest in doing something particularly dangerous (like going out without enough skills).

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Give the pool a go and see if you have ear problems. If you do- check with at ENT doctor to see if they can figure out what the issue is. It is always possible that you will not be able to dive. BUT don't make your decision based on heresay!

Most LDS's (Local Dive Shops) have what is "try scuba" where you can use equipment under supervision in a pool. Outside of that, you really should not be able to play around in the pool with dive gear as an uncertified diver.

Once you have your open water card, you are "in theory" allowed to dive at sites that are less that 60 feet deep. Don't be stupid, dive within your training and with someone more experienced that can act as your mentor.

One of the good things about the dive club is that you should be able to find more than one mentor.

One more thing - you can always sign up for a try scuba class in the Sinai!

Go on the trip even if you may not be able to dive. Life is short don't live with memories of alot of regrets!

Thanks for the advice. I shall give the pool a go, and I shall definatly go on the trip. Even if I only snorkel it will be a great trip.
