Hi all,

I wanted to "pop my head in" and say hello to everyone!

My wife and I are just now getting started with diving (we're taking the PADI OW course at The Great American Dive Company). So we're not yet certified, but after we get our cert's we'll be looking to make some friends and go diving locally as well as on vacations to Florida and who know's where else.

I have to tell you all how surprised I was at the number of local dive sites to vist near the St. Louis area. I had always thought that the water's around here were just too murky for anyone but search and rescue crew's hauling out bodies... Thank God that's not the case!

The school we're taking the classes at will take us to Meremet Springs in southern IL for our OW check out dives, and I'm glad to have found thier website, very neat looking!

I was hoping that somone could answer this for me: I've had several people ask me "Where are you going to dive? Arn't the rivers too dangerous?" For now, I just give them a polite "well I'm not sure just yet, we're just learning" but I'd like to be able to give them a more informed answer. To me it does seem like the Missouri and the Mississippi are way too dangerous for diving, but I've really only seen those rivers from the confines of the City of St. Louis and St. Charles.

Right now I think my wife and I are mainly interested in quarry, swimming pools :) , and florida, but it would be nice to find out in advance where you guys like to go diving.

Oh, and thanks for putting up with newbies like us, I know that we get on some nerves sometimes (from reading the boards), but I want you all to know that we really do appreciate advice and learning from those that have gone before!

Lots of quarries (Rolla, Mermet, Cerulean, Haigh to name a few) in your area. Also lots of lakes (Beaver, Bull Shoals, Table Rock, Michigan). Also springs and rivers (Not the two you mentioned but the Current River, for example). Bonne Terre Mine is popular for some.

Here are some places to visit to find out about sites in your area:
