Hello everyone! I'm currently in the process of getting certified and figured it couldn't hurt to join a forum to get the much needed info for scuba diving.
Since this in an intro, here is some info about me:
I'm a 41 year old male, living in NJ (US). I'm taking my PADI course at The Dive Shop NJ and have completed the pool diving. Next up is the open water dives, which I will be completing in April in Cozumel! Can't wait.
So far, I've purchased mask, fins, boots, snorkel, 3mil farmer john wetsuit, and a BCD (Dive Rite TransPac w/EXP Wing). I plan on buying a dive comp/reg setup when I can afford it, but for now I've borrowed one from a family member for my certification trip. I'm sure after that, I'll buy a better (full) wetsuit and start investing in all the other goodies available whenever I can. I plan to get into some local wreck diving. I'm told there are many to visit along the Jersey shore.
I also own a Canon Powershot D10 which is waterproof to about 30'. Great for snorkeling, but unfortunately I won't be able to use it much while diving. Maybe one day I'll go down the underwater photography path and invest in a nice camera too!
My experience with diving so far has just been snorkeling in Cozumel and Grand Cayman and I thoroughly enjoyed both experiences. But I've decided to take the plunge (I bet a million people have said that before, huh?) and see what's really under the sea.
I have a 75 gallon saltwater reef tank at home, which gives me and my wife a fix of the ocean year round. I'm also a member of NJ Reefers Club which is a local club dedicated to the conservation of the oceans reefs, and also promotes propagation of corals and knowledge about reefkeeping to help others in the hobby. My screen name here is the same as I use on NJRC... I thought it might be appropriate for both forums.
That's about it for now. Feel free to ask questions or offer any advice to a newbie.
