Hi,
I registered last week, so I missed this part of the Forum to say hello and introduce myself. I am new to the sport but have spent alot of time listening to my husband and his sister on their diving experiences. Of course Santa Fe NM isn't an area one might expect to have anything to do with Scuba! :11: I hope to gain alot of tips and knowledge here and have fun in the process. I already posted queries about some BC's we purchased and ScottZeagle was wonderful in replying.
Anyone out there have any interesting experiences to share having dived the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa NM?

Hi mushymom, and welcome aboard. Love that New Mexico Southwest art.
David

Santa Rosa's Blue Hole is a nice training pit, but it does have some dangers. Be sure to follow your Instructors briefings closely and wear a heavy wet suit. You might also take a gallon of warm water in an insulated jug and have a quart poured down the inside back of your wetsuit before each dive. A beanie and gloves would be good ideas.

Your Instructor will probably supply your air fills, but do say hi to Stella in the office there. Indeed, say hi for me would you. (I'm the guy who gave her the scales to weigh her unmarked weights. She'll remember that.)

I'll enclose a few pics from my last dive there last month...

Thanks Don for the words of wisdom. We had done our first dives last weekend, and I finish up this weekend. Stella wasn't in last weekend, but if she is this sunday I will certainly tell her hello for you. Yes Blue Hole is a bit daunting at first, but is pretty cool all in all. Definately cold, and wear a 7mm and gloves and beanie. :o)

Thanks! Lisa

Oh, okay - you've been there? And Stella wasn't?! Wow! :11: I always call ahead to ensure she will be, as I don't like carrying tanks there for as little as she charges - $5 a fill including tank use, and she always tells me that she's always there. Guess she's human after all.

Perch Lake is colder down close to the springs for some reason. Dived there in March last year trying to get used to colder waters before a California trip (a Californian would call Blue Hole's 62 degree water toasty) and I swear I found 50 degrees with an accurate thermometer. Couldn't take it at first, but a month later in the Channel Islands, my body seemed to have adapted. :yelclap:

Well, I am in hopes that she will be there This Sunday. The guy who replaced her last weekend wasn't all that thorough. My second tank wasn't half full! After he told me it was full. hmmmmmm.... :bunny: I am looking forward to finishing and getting my open water cert. ;) There was a possibility we might dive in Perch, however they haven't fixed the ladders yet, so we'll stick with Blue Hole. Still Blue Hole is cold enough for me! :penguin2: Should be fun either way. :D

That happens all over. Good to check those things.

Have fun on your check-out dives. Yeah, crawling out of Perch Lake in the mud is a bummer - done that. As much money as we pump into that town, they can't replace the broken ladders...? :11: They were broken over a year ago.

Hello,
I am a new member on this site and find it to be great. I never heard of that hole dive. I have family in Santa Fe, Dixon and Alb... Who would have thought of NM as a dive local? Too cool.

DandyDon,
Where were you when I needed you. I joined the Board in May of last year and first thing I did was try and get some info about diving in NM and Texas as we were going to be traveling there in our RV in the summer! I got a number of posts (1 or 2 about some TX locations but the vast majority were ridiculing the idea of divng in NM, and to a lesser degree in TX!
I left the board in disgust and only returned today becasue a number of frinds keep telling me what a good resource it is for info and education about all things diving! Not my experience - but am trying again!
I dive primarily in the SE FL sometimes from my boat, sometimes from a few different dive boats I am familiar with and normally during the week when it is less crowded.
Am looking forward to a trip to the Keys shortly to dive the NEW Spiegel Grove with Capt Gary and Admiral Brinda - the best dive shop in the Keys.
