This thread,http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/ad...81300-no-deco-diving-when-do-you-head-up.html Got me thinking again.:shakehead: Heck it hurts.:D

But still,HOW many of you DO realy plan a dive.
Or do you jump in and have FUN.:D

For me,most of my dives are in the 40-80ft range. So for those dives I don't care about rockbottom .Just take care of my air consumption on that dive.
Be sure to have at least 50/60 bar left.

Edit: this is a NON cave NON wreck nor extreme deep dive.

BTW THIS IS BASIC SCUBA so keep it nice, even if you don't agree.

depends on the dive for me....if it's a local site i've been to a thousand times i just jump in and go until NDL or my gas limit.

If it's a cave dive, deep dive, or a site i'm not familiar with i will plan the dive.

Just curious if you happen to know what the rock bottom pressure would be for your SAC rate at 80'? :mooner:

MY rockbottem at 80" is 120 bar.But it would depent on my buddy ,if any.
If not It would be 140bar.

O heck,that doesn't tell you anything.:D

You don't know my starting pressure nor my tank size.

So,

Start at 240bar
Size (mostly)10 Liter.

If the site or condition or purpose of the dive is not the normal dive for us, we will plan. Most of our dives are shallow, well within NDL and a typical surface pressure is 33%-50% of a tank remaining. For these, we just dive and have fun with basic planning only.

you need a 3rd option. Other people plan & I follow

As a new diver (25 dives) I plan every dive. I dive mostly wrecks off of the NC coast and will write several rock bottoms on my slate corresponding to rock bottom at the sand and then first deck, second deck etc as applicable. I must admit though that I am too reliant on my computer for multilevel dives. I will have a basic plan for NDL but maybe I am in the sand longer than I thought looking for teeth, and I will adjust accordingly for the next level of the profile based on the computer. As for the discussion about teaching rock bottom, without getting into the legal side of things, I think that training (I can only speak from my experience and what I have heard from friends) in the states at least is very much lacking on the gas management/gas planning (<--trying to avoid a wording semantics argument) side. I know they mention the effects of pressure on consumption, but wish they would at least run through a quick calculation for rock bottom just to get the seed planted. That way, new divers know that there is more than the rule of thirds and could seek further information. I have often heard people say that it is too math intensive, but if multiplication and addition are too math intensive for someone, I do not know how they can possibly handling task loading. Hell, the rule of third is division, right? : P I have found great resources on this board and others for learning how to dive more safely with regards to the gas I am carrying on my back, and I think it would be beneficial to new divers if not teaching them the actual calculations for rock bottom, to at least let them know why those calculations are done and where to find more information.

I'm curious. Do you plan dives using the same math as this poll. Right now there are 20 responses, with the vote split evenly at 10 and 10. Interestingly, each has 52.63% of the total.

No wonder folks have so much trouble with the decopmression tables. (where are those dammed dingbats when you need them
