I'm a Fish!
Anyone know of some dive sites (quarries, whatever..) around the Houston area?

It don't have to be awesome viz, but I would sure like to get some dives in while I'm there. Also, can someone recomend a good shop in the Clear Lake area?

There are two shops in Clear Lake. Both on I-45/Gulf Frwy. across from each other.
One on the Northbound side, the other the southbound. Both south of Nasa Pkwy (formerly Nasa Rd. 1) I think the one on the Northbound side is the better shop. It has over twice the selection (tons of stuff in stock) and he is a discounter (20 to 40% off MSRP). It is called Divers Paradise: 281-332-9982, www.dpscuba.com . They both could work on their customer service at times though. If you are looking for trips in the Gulf or something lookup Bay Area Divers, the local club, on the web. There is no real diving in Houston. Two local quarrys or a drive up to Huntsville to the Blue Lagoon. Enough to get wet but nothing to brag about.

Lake Travis in Austin is a possibilty, although it's not exactly in the Houston area

Cool! Ya, that will be close to where I will be staying, so I'll check 'em out. Thanks!

Just getting wet works fine for me. Where are the two quarries? Also, in November, will I be ok in a 7mm suit down there?

Ya, thats too far of a drive I think...

There are 2 "dive sites" in Houston...Twin Lakes which is south of downtown Houston near Pearland (about 20 minutes south of Downtown)

The other is in Huntsville about 1 to 1.5 hours north of Houston. It's called Blue Lagoon.
The website is not working now, but it likely will be back up again soon. It goes offline sometimes.

Of the two, Blue Lagoon is better than Twin Lakes in my opinion. Blue Lagoon is much clearer water and there are a few sunken boats and stuff to check out. Twin Lakes is pretty murky. The one thing Twin Lakes has going for it, is it has Fish. Blue Lagoon doesnt have any fish because the water is slightly Alkaline. It wont harm you, but it wont support algae which is why it's so clear, and why there's no fish.

Another alternative is to take a rig trip out of the Freeport area. I know Randy at Sport Divers has a boat. There are several charters though.
Randy is a member of SB, but I cant remember his name...I think it's CaptRandy?

You can just google for charters in the Texas Gulf Coast. I'd look for boats that run out of Freeport or maybe Galveston?

As for the 7mil? I'd say in November that should still be just fine......

Good luck, and hope you enjoy texas....
