In order for a LDS to service equipment such as a BC or reg, does that LDS need to be an authorized dealer of the particular brand you have?

Does it need to be? To get parts, usually. Unless they are a full-service place, like Air-Tech. Then they get parts for (and service) everything.

No, though sometimes that makes it easier with some brands.

Make sure that the PERSON (at the shop) that is doing service work on YOUR equipment is a certified technician on the brand of your equipment. Tech guys move around...

You also need to look at the whether you want to keep it under warranty. I've had some customers get very upset when they found out they no longer had a warranty because they took it to a buddy, who is not an authorized dealer, for service a couple of times.

I concur. Our LDS has a tech certified for several brands they do not carry.
