The guides we used were picking up starfish, see urchins, etc and passing them around for people to touch. To be honest it didn't seem to do the creatures any harm but wasn't sure if this was the done thing or not.

Pretty much all of the boat dives here are "guided" by DMs and the majority of the divers on them are tourists. It is a usual practice for the DMs to tickle an octopus out so that the tourists can get an "up close" of them.

However, I have not noticed that this encouraged the divers to harass the sealife or try to ferret out any octopi on their own - but this could probably be because they don't really know where to spot them.
