I always used the shops rental suits, didn't like pool chemicals in my suits. All classes were conducted in the same gear that would be used in the ocean for obvious reasons

I had my students use the same gear in the pool that they would use when we went to open water. That way when they did their skills in the pool with hoods and gloves ect. it was an easy transition to ow. Our pool was outside anyway.

For the final pool sessions, I require my student's to use the same gear that they will be using for checkouts. It makes the transistion a lot easier, they get used to the bouyancy characteristics and they know that what they have will be working in a couple of days. Only one student ever bucked the system and did his final pool in a shorty. When he hit the 70 degree water a couple of days later.. The bug eyed look was priceless.

We did not have to buy any wetsuit, only mask, snorkel, fins, ... all else was provided
Pool sessions were 3 and 4 hours long
Nobody overheated (remember, you can let in water into your suit as needed)

And rightly so in my mind if your LDS is going to require one...

If your going to be diving in the drysuit, then yes, train in it from the beginning, or if your going to be in a thick wetsuit, then train in that

I doubt this would happen since we are talking about OW... I can see it now, first night in the pool; Instructor "What the heck do you think your doing with that Dry suit???" Student "getting ready for the caves!!!" "by the way, teacher; whats this "P-tube" thingy...? :D

As for the amount of cost .. that varries ... you probably do not want to know what is charged here by my LDS for training, some places give you a much better deal than your figures

Fair statement but I think I was using fair numbers... Some will spend more on their mask while others spend less

the OP is going to be buying a 3mm suit because that's what's needed for where he will be diving

Yea, I know...

Enough from this end... the horse has not moved for a while! ;)

I am not sure why anyone would recommend a PS Its sounds like some of the boys at your dive shop kind of goated you into buying the 3mm for training... If that the case, I would already be looking for a new shop! Would not surprise me if they have already mentioned buying that "Must have" dry suit!!!

Good luck and I hope you truly enjoy it as much as we do...!

I don't feel like the LDS personnel pushed me into buying the suit. I asked some questions here, got some opinions and advice then took what I had learned here and asked more questions at the LDS which they answered. At no time did I ever get told "this is what you should do." So I feel like I got good advice and made an informed decision. At least I hope I made an informed decision. :)

As I said in a previous post my immediate goals are to dive in tropical waters, and the place I am going on my first dive vacation has recommended a 3mm wetsuit, so instead of waiting and buying just before I go on vacation and not knowing anything about my buoyancy in the suit I decided to go ahead and buy it and take the pool training in it so I can start getting familiar with it.

Michael

Michael, I pretty much understand what and why you did what you did...

Only 2 things kind of bothered me in this thread, 1. I thought the guys may have pushed a 3mm on you unnecessarily (I am glad to hear you say they did not!) and 2. Some folks saying you should get what you will be diving for OW... This is something I don't understand, and why would anybody insist on someone buying a 7mm who is living in Ohio? Insist?

:deadhorse:

Never mind to those who insist...!

Michael, I know you will have a good time and doing it over the weekend is well, well more than I would have wanted to do... Be safe and have fun!

That's really a terrible animation!!!

Yeah, I would have preferred spreading it out over a bit more time but I had to balance taking these classes with my personal training and I could not get the days off training I needed so... it's all weekend. :)

But it should be a fun new experience, then it is off to do my OW dives in Monterey Bay. Whee! I will be renting a suit for that dive.

Michael
