I see there are a few of you who have the Mosquito and like it. I have some questions about certain features. #1 Is it only in freedive mode that you have to worry about the ascent rate indicator locking you out if you come up too fast? What about moving your arm too fast to look at your computor or while taking pictures, etc?? #2. Is it adjustable for fresh and salt water? #3. Is it automatically activated upon entering the water or do you have to start it? #4. What is the battery life? Can it easily be switched back and forth between air and nitrox modes during your dive day or do you need your pc or a technician in a dive store to change it? I have not owned a dive computer before, just used rentals by other companies. Are there any little quirks you wish you had known about before buying your Mosquito. In my research it seems to be a pretty good all round air/nitrox computer. I would appreciate all oppinions! Thanks

You can download the Mosquito manual at:
http://www.suunto.com/pls/suuntogw/docs/F759081841/Mosquito-ENG.pdf

1. ascent rates don't cause lockouts.
2. Set for salt water
3. auto
4. to new to tell, manual has estimates based on number of dives per year.

I have written some reviews of the Mosquito.

Thank you Ralph, I really appreciate all the input!!!!!

#1 Is it only in freedive mode that you have to worry about the ascent rate indicator locking you out if you come up too fast?

I'm pretty sure that is in all modes... and it's probably not that sensitive where moving your arm fast will effect it.

#2. Is it adjustable for fresh and salt water?

Not sure. I'll be diving mostly in fresh water, so I hope that's ok!

#3. Is it automatically activated upon entering the water or do you have to start it?

Automatic, as soon as the terminals and one button (any of the four buttons) make contact by water it is activated.

#4. What is the battery life?
Not entirely sure...

#5. Can it easily be switched back and forth between air and nitrox modes during your dive day?

Yes, I believe it can.

#6. Are there any little quirks you wish you had known about before buying your Mosquito.

Not yet... I've been messing around with it quite a bit and it's easy to learn and use. I do wish there was an adjustment for the backlight so it would stay on longer/shorter and also, I wish the beep was a little louder (I have high pitch deafness) and in order to hear the beeps it needs to be about 6 inches from my ear. I'm not sure if being under water will help or hurt that.

Let's see,

#1 Is it only in freedive mode that you have to worry about the ascent rate indicator locking you out if you come up too fast?

There is NO ascent rate indicator in freedive mode. Rapid ascents do not cause lockouts in air of EAN modes. They do extend the safety stops and if the stops are ignored or cut short, NDL limits will be reduced on the next dives. I've never seen arm motion cause an ascent warning

#2. Is it adjustable for fresh and salt water?

Not sure. I'll be diving mostly in fresh water, so I hope that's ok!

Depth readings are set for salt water you'll have a ~3% error in fresh water. Deco info is based on pressure, salt or fresh makes no difference.

#5. Can it easily be switched back and forth between air and nitrox modes during your dive day?

Yes, I believe it can.

No it cannot. When diving nitrox (or planning to dive nitrox later before the computer clears) set it to nitox mode and set the mix to 21% when diving air. If you're not sure when you might want to switch to nitrox, keep it in nitrox mode, it defaults to 21%

I hear the beeps fine in the air, not at all in the water, the alarms (for me at least) are basically a useless feature. The backlight is too dim for my eyes, I generally don't use it. Some of the indicators on the display (not the main mumbers) are very small and hard to read.

Thanks guys, I really do appreciate all the info!! I'm fairly new to scuba. I got certified about a year and a half ago for open water, advanced, low visibility/night diving and for computer/compass, But I don't go on a regular basis. My sister and I went to Cozumel for a week last year and also went to Bahamas for a week with our scuba club. Anyway, I don't have much experience with dive computers and I'm looking for one that's VERY USER FREINDLY!! I've checked things out on the computer but there are so many to choose from..... would you consider the mosquito a good choice for a FIRST computer or is there another one (or two or so) you would recomend? I've checked different sites, like Rodales. Money is an issue also, can't afford to make a mistake. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions...........

My personal opinion is to get the Mosquito. I do a lot of research before I buy anything and I am really picky besides. The reasons I went with the Mosquito are:

You can change your own battery

You can wear it as a watch (makes it easier to justify the $$$)

Lots of features, but easy to use

Does everything todays Rec diver needs a computer for

Affordable

Not to try and support online buying, but since you said money is an issue... I bought mine from www.diveinn.com for $264 and got the PC interface at the same time for an extra $69.

Best wishes!

Thank you Murdock for the input! I got a mosquito off ebay and ordered the pc interface from DIVEINN, it's on back order. I appreciate the recommendation to get the pc interface from DIVEINN; much cheaper than anywhere else, THANK YOU!! I will let you guys know how it goes; I plan on using it next month in Cozumel. Wish me luck.

Please make sure you try it out in the dive shop pool before your trip, so you can get used to reading it first! I know that this is kind of a common sense caution, but I remember during my trip to coz their was a girl on the dive boat with a sunnto mosquito, who had told me on the way out to the dive site that it was new and this would be her first time using it. Seemed odd to me that she hadn't check it out in a pool first. Anyway the dive was for 90feet, the divermaster had told everyone not to go below 90 feet. Well we hop in the water and head down to about 80, and I notice the girl with the mosquito keep descending and descending and descending causing a panic among us. She finally stopped and ascended back up to the group and we continued on with the dive. Once we got back on the boat I had ask her about her dive-bomber decent. She had told me she was reading the wrong number on her computer for the depth and thought she was at like 40 feet. Luckily she had figured it out before she got any deeper. Anyway please get used to the computer before your trip, dive safe and have a blast.
