But where to go for really cool diving, but not more than maybe 5 hours from Austin?

I want to take a weekend trip somewhere on 11/12-13. It's a first anniversary for me and the hubby so I want to do something special. We've borrowed an RV to use for the weekend. We live in Austin.
Checked Balmorhea - too far from Austin for a weekend trip.
Checked Corpus - no boats going out; no shore diving
Checked Port Aransas - the trips in the gulf are wishy-washy right now and a little expensive for me, really. They say there is shore diving at the jetties so this is a possibility.
Would love to go to the place in AR that has the crystals, but again that is pretty far for a weekend trip.
Where can we go? Ideas, please?

You could find a romantic area to camp at Broken Bow Lake, OK. The area is very pretty, the diving is nice, very reasonable costs to go there and there is a dive shop in the town of Broken Bow( Broken Bow Scuba) I think it would fit within the 5 hour window from Austin.

Lake Murray ,OK is sorta cool too and not a bad dive spot either and its close to the Casino

Where ever you go have fun !! :14:

Tyler State Park is also an option- it is about 4-5 hrs from Austin, and is very pretty. The diving is okay, there are definitely fish to see, although it is not sparkling clear vis. The camping is very nice though. It's also nice and cheap, and there are dive shops in Tyler for air fills, but not at the park itself. I can give you a heads up about a cool brush pile where tons of fish hang out. Timeliner and I hovered there about 45 mins on our last dive there, and had a blast just hanging with the fishies.

I agree with him on Broken Bow, also. It's very beautiful there, and although I haven't camped there, it's got great places to camp and dive. Give us a report. Do you ever camp and dive at the Comal? I want to do that soon!

RumBum, I am kinda in the same spot. I like diving in decent viz, abundant aquatic life environments and I am having a hard time finding many places within 5 hours or so that meets that criteria. I hear that now the water temp is dropping, the viz will be improving, but that still doesn't open up too many more spots within driving distance. My fave is still Aquarena Springs/San Marcos river for good viz and aquatic life.

Anyway, if you find some new spots please let us know. Thanks.
