I had to go against doctor's order (related to an injury) and dive today to test out some gear, so I headed down to Hathaway Pond on the Cape. There was not even a hint of ice on the pond.

Water temp at 40' was 38degs - vis was not great espically for this time of year (around 10'max).

I did a few dives in Hathaway's Pond and saw very little. I recall one sunfish and a car that had fallen through the ice. A Saab right?

What is the draw to Hathaways for you guys?

There's also a sunken cabin cruiser marked by a lobster buoy. :D

The appeal is that it is basically a pool where one can easily do training dives. The bottom is extremely silty, the water is warmer than the ocean, the entry is very easy, and you don't have to rinse your gear when you're done.

And you can dive it in rough weather.

For me, it's a great place to train. Easy entry, pretty small area, and you can dive pretty much regardless of weather. I feel safer doing drills and trying out new gear there than in the open ocean. It's pretty deep too (vs 20' shore dives that common on the SS). I like the cabin crusier too it's named "The Field and Stream" and is in 25-30' of water. on the far side.

The _only_ thing I like about hathaway is the silt. It definately keeps you honest, and is a great way to make sure your anti-silting techniques are working. When I dove there early last year, it was _really_ easy to see if your trim was off when you looked back and saw the tufts of silt kicking up from the bottom.

Granted it's one hell of a trip for me to get down to, but at least it ain't a pool.

Where is the car? I have an idea how to find the Field and Stream -- is the buoy still there?

Hi Aaron, the buoy is still on the F&S (as of last week). If you enter by the main beach (near the life guard stations), as opposed to that path when you first arrive at the pond, you bear right slightly out of the beach in about 15' of water (right at the end of an underwater wall) and there is a training platform, if you pick up (by swimming out) the 20-25' contour line and swim to your right (counterclockwise) toward the other entry point at the path you will find the sabb. Basically, I navigate the pond by depth (it's a round bowl). Either way the Sabb is in about 20' of water 1/2 between the 2 entry points and might even have a buoy on it.

My father and his buddy were going to dive there tommorow, but, his buddy can't go, so I might tag along if my back isn't too sore. I'll either be in my old (somewhat beat-up) black Jeep or my father's big, white Chevy Caprice. I'm the jackass with 2 differently colored double tanks - feel free to come and say hello if you are down there.
