D300 doesn't do video.

I have one I use on the surface and am happy with it, but no underwater housing for mine yet. The Canon vs Nikon debate will go on forever. The better question is do you have any lenses already?

Sorry, for some reason I glanced right over the "s".

Do you already have a particular brand of lenses?

I switched from my D300 to a G11 'cause it was smaller profile and easier to use for the type of pix i take. I am not a professional and dont need all the extra gear. I use the D300 for above water.

The D300s is a great camera and the HD video is good quality. However, if you do not have an investment into Nikon lenses already, then I would seriously consider the Canon 7D instead. The 7d is 18 MP vs 12.1. It shoots 1080P video where as the Nikon is only 720. It is a superior camera.

After being a 10 year Nikon shooter, the 7d switched me to Canon. It is very well built and ergonomic.

Housings for the 7d are/will be available from every manufacturer. Seacam is definitely the most costly...there are some VERY nice housings for significantly less.

Ok so you already have lenses so the D300s would be the better way to go I'd say.

Everyone says that the Canon 7d is better at video, and I believe it must be so. But I find it unpersuasive that the reason is 1080p versus 720p. Likewise, I find it unpersuasive that 18mp is better than 12mp. Canon CUT the mp of the G11 from the G10 to increase quality. Nikon's current flagship pro camera (D3S) is 12mp, and we know the 7d's 18mp aren't better than that. Broadcast hdtv is 720p and those sports events look pretty darn good as is. I'd certainly be happy with that quality. What are the RELEVANT reasons that make 7d better at video? If 1080p is relevant and I am missing the boat then I'd appreciate an explanation why. Thanks,

"One needs at least a doubling of linear resolution or film size to make an obvious improvement. This is the same as quadrupling the megapixels." From 12 to 18Mp there is VERY little difference if at all...
