Hello there.

I have become interested in spearfishing lately and was wondering if taking an Underwater Hunter specialty would be a good start. I have no previous spearfishing experience but would like to try it out under some controlled environment.

Has anyone taken this course or a similar experience?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Come by Dean's Dive Center in Fort Myers. We will answer all you need to know. Ask the boss Brent, the owner. He is one of the best in the area.

Even thou I had been hunting about a year, I still took a underwater hunting course and it was very helpful. The shop I use is owner by an avid spearfisherman so his course revolves around the type of spearfishing that would be done locally. Here in Texas we dive oil rigs so our guns are set up with cable. Were alot of people in other areas might use mono or free shaft.

Michael,

You are right, learning from the locals is the best part about taking a spearing class in another area.

I learned about spearing with a riding rig from my Hell Diver buddies.

Right again, on the FL west coast freeshafting is very big!

Thanks for the responses guys. Chad you are very well recommended as an instructor in other forums.

I will drop by Dean's dive center.

Cheers.

theres no nned in a underwater hunting course.:no All you need to do is find a dive buddy and borrow a gun and make sure there is nobody else there. Jus practice shotin and loadin the gun that would help you a lot. try shootin some small fish like perch etc... theres no point in spendin the money on a underwater hunting couse. Just be very careful and dont shoot ur buddy in the butt:crafty:

Fishing 30 miles off shore requires a bit more than making sure no one his around and splating perch. By the way there are so many things to shot at besides small fish..like...I dont know....a spot in the sand?

Brent's course deals with so much more than pointing a gun thing and shooting the sharp thing at some little fish. Managing one's gun is certainly part of the course, as is safety, game laws, stalking fish, dealing with other toothy critters (Baracudas, Sharks), and responsibilty to one's self when all you can think about is "...just one more minute, then I will head up."

MATTS1W hit it right on the head. Make sure you know the laws and guidlines for you area. You don't want to be like a guy i knew that went bought a fishing license went and shot a limit of walleyes, surfaced and met the game warden. Who took his scuba gear, speargun, and car for illegally taking a limit of fish. You can't scuba dive and spear game fish in minnesota. ooops! If he would have checked with the dive shop or taken the class he would have known the laws. The class is worth the training.

Good hunting.

I have been wanting to take the same course, but here on the west coast. does anyone have a instructor, in SoCal they would recommend.

In my OW class I had a Hawaiian course director spend about 4-5 hr in the pool useing a Hawaiian sling...now that I have a little more skill I would like to try in the real world. I am really interested lobster hunting technique.
