My wife and I are accompanying another couple in Huatulco for the first week of March this year and I am the only diver among us. The others will most likely do some snorkelling and I would like to take a morning or a day and do a few dives. I mostly enjoy wrecks. I've read some of the info on the net and it sounds pretty interesting, but was wondering if anyone who has actually been wet there can give me some first hand info.

thanks

We have not been diving in Huatulco - but have been there 3 times. We have been fishing and horseback riding (which might be a nice pastime for the non-divers in your group). On two trips we rented a condo at Zaashilla, the third trip we stayed at the Sheraton. Both were great. I believe there are 2 dive ops down there. I remember readiing about a "Hurricane Divers".

The open restaurant at the south end of the pool at Zaashilla is nice for lunch. For dinner we had lots of fresh fish (very cheap) on the beach under a little palm umbrella.

I believe Continental Air has restarted a direct flight out of Houston. That would sure beat going through Mexico City.

I have not been diving in Huatulco, but have been snorkeling there, and I have just returned from a trip to Mazunte, ~1hr west from Huatulco, where I have been snorkeling and my husband has been doing some diving. Huatulco has some scuba shops that operate all year round, so going diving should not be a problem for you. I cannot comment on the quality of the shops though.

In Mazunte we have been with a group of divers from Mexico City who brought their own compressor. There is no permanent operator in this beach. The visibility in the area was not great (3-10m), but there was quite a lot of marine life to see. The proverbial large marine life (of which I have seen none), but also a lot of smaller tropical fishes and turtles, and many rays and eels. In my modest snorkeling around the rocks in the beach I was able to identify more than 50 different species, and I saw lots of other creatures that are still un-IDed. All in all, it is worth it.

Let us know how it goes!

Cheers,

Itziar
