i have a similiar product and they would be too big and too hot for gloves or booties IMO. They can't go next to your skin because they get too hot.

Anyone try the hand warmers shown on this site in their booties or gloves or elsewhere in their wetsuit?

http://www.nahpco.com/heat_packs_small.htm

if anyone has a better source, please let me know. this site sells them in cartons and I just want two or four to try out.

I use them, and they work just fine, at least for warming up my hands between dives. WalMart has them for about $4 each.

I don't think walmart has the wet kind, only the dry ones. the ones on the website above are encased in plastic and don't require oxygen for activation. I think you can find ones that are pretty small so they fit in gloves and booties and maybe they would even be good for inside a wetsuit. I think the high heat from them could be dampened by a layer of cloth or other material in between the pack and the skin. any thoughts?

I'm not sure what you mean by wet and dry. The WalMart ones I have look exactly like the ones on that website: liquid-filled plastic bags with a small metal disk floating inside. You acitivate them by bending the disk, and the liquid solidifies and gets hot (about 130 degrees F). Boiling the bag recharges it, turning the solid back to liquid.
One wierd sidenote: the liquid is the same chemical used to flavor salt-and-vinegar potato chips. Ain't technology wonderful!

okay, yes those are the ones. i searched the walmart site and couldn't find any type of hand warmers. damn! i did find a company that makes really small ones - 3x3". they're at

does walmart sell that size? yes, technology is indeed wonderful!

I just remember seeing the one I bought, 4.5 X 3". They're in with the camping stuff.

You'd need to know absolutely what would happen if one broke open at depth and spilled out in your suit. Burn? Rash? Harm suit? Nothing? I'd want to know for sure before I dove with one.

The ones activated with the little metal circle are great. They're entirely liquid filled, so you're not going to burst one in your suit or anything like that. Besides, the only thing in them is sodium acetate and water... not remotely toxic or dangerous.

edit: There's a nice page about them at http://www.howstuffworks.com/question290.htm

The ones you get at Wal-Mart are air (oxygen) activated and simply won't work underwater.

I think the warmers at this site would be perfect.

check out the little ones that are made for hands. I plan on putting them in my gloves and booties and am even considering using larger ones in my wetsuit jacket. the heat will probably be too localized, but i think it's worth a shot.
