Thanks for the link. I never would have thought of a few of those. They could come in useful. I am e-mailing the link to my dive buddy.

Great sites but missing some of my favorites - problem is I can't draw. I also like how politically incorrect diving can be - for example the DSAT TecRec signal for I'm bent (or is that just a british thing) and the signal (as if you need it...) for a dolphin (split up into Adolf Fin) - again maybe a Brit thing.

All time favourite has to be Grooper ..... translate grouper and have some fun!

The Red Sea DM's have loads and are always entertaining....

My AOW instructor puts his fists up like a boxer as the perfect signal for a mantis shrimp. The first time I saw him do it, I knew exactly what he meant. As a bonus his facial expression is priceless...!

I was tought this one by a dive guide in Monteray. First and second finger crossed and point with this cross. Means remember this, we'll talk about it later. Very good for new areas and new divers.

A diver in our group saw a trumpet fish and pointed it out to her buddy. In her excitement she made a sign for the fish--both fists by her regulator then the right arm extends and comes back to the starting position (just like playing a trombone). After the dive her buddy asked what the heck she was talking about. She made the motion for my buddy and I and asked what we would look for if she did that, we both said "trumpet fish". Her buddy never did see how we got that but hey, a trombone is a brass instrument just like a trumpet! Sometimes ya gotta take the signs with a grain of salt!

My husband is very proficient in sign language because both of his parents are deaf. On our very first warm water dive (on the lovely island of St. Lucia), I swam up to him and spelled W-O-W. He looked at me, perplexed, then looked at his air and wanted to see mine. I shook my head, and spelled out W-O-W again, very slowly. He just didn't get it, shook his head and indicated we'd talk about it back up top. After we got back on the dive boat, I asked him, "Didn't I spell W-O-W correctly?" and he thought I was signaling 3-0-3. The rest of the dive boat overheard it, and since we usually had most of the same people on each morning dive trip, for the rest of the trips some smarty-pants diver would come up to him during the dive and spell W-O-W. We met some wonderful people on the trip and still get a good laugh on every dive when I signal W O W!

The marine life hand signals is particularily useful. We saw an octopus on our last dive. I signaled with 8 fingers, then pointed to my arms. I think my buddy thought I had seen a spider.
