I injured my hand and want to understand more aout how it affects diving. I',m thinkin' others have done this before me - is there a post or resource for more info'? Also, any ideas howto finfd a good dive doc'? thx. -s.d

To find a dive doc contact Divers Alert Network and ask for a referral in your area.

What type of hand injury? If it was a crushing or broken bone most likely it will just be an inconvenience because you can't grab anyting, like a ladder.

If you are talking open wound the best thing is to slather it in a triplr antibiotic, cover with a good cressing to keep antibiotic in place and go dive. Wash with soap after dive and apply more antibiotic. Keep moist and clean. Unless you plan to dive known dirty water such as a quarry, then stay out of the water until healed.

You could also try a dry glove with the wrist seals.

mudddiver: I ripped out chunks so it's open wound type, right? It still bleeds thru the neosporin+dressing I change 3x or 4x per day, and since I was told keep it dry, I want to prevent making it wirse which might extend the recovery timetable, no? I like the dry glove idea - but will pressure inhibit healing?

Hi s.d.,

Assuming that it was a qualifed health professional who told you this, then the answer to your question is, "When s/he says you can return to SCUBA." Water can be loaded with pathogens and not a kindly place for deep, open wounds. Play it safe.

See DocV's response. I was really referring to a minor abrasion or scabbed over cut. I would not immerse anyting with large chunks missing. The sting of salt water alone would take all the fun out of the diving anyway.

What's the push to get in the water? Just rescedule for after you are healed up.

docvikingo: thx for providing educational info - and doing so promptly!

muddiver:
it's just pain, Marine! ;)

my push is that it happened 1 week into a 2 week trip in the fl Keys; am here to dive and after this trip I move to CA ... sooooo, I've committed all my time & money to a locale I won't be back to soon for an activity I can no longer do (DOH!!)

alas, you are both correct & I'll just get a good tan. ideas for south beach-esque places to ogle sheilas?
