So long story short... My fiancee and I decided we wanted to go to Australia for our honeymoon, and dive the GBR. So we booked a trip including, among other things, a day trip (Out of Port Douglas - abort the SilverSonic if anyone's familiar with it). Then we went to our LDS here and did the OW certification.

I'm sure the bright ones will see where this is going. After the OW class, we loved it so much we want more!

So now we've got a 2 week vacation next month, of which only one day is diving. Unfortunately we're staying at a few different places and flying between, so the days we can dive are a bit limited because of that. Our biggest block of free time w/o airplane interruption is on Hamilton Island.

Before someone pipes up about the search feature, yes I used it. I found a thread from 2000, posted again in 2007, but it looked like a lot of the recommendations were of the style of "don't go there, go to this other place nearby". At this point, the trip is booked, so alternatives (Or liveaboards) are not an option.

From what I can tell, there is a dive shop there Home Page, but the last news update on their webpage being a year ago doesn't give me the biggest good feelings on it. However, I did contact them about what's available (waiting to hear back).

Does anyone know if there are alternative to H2O Sportz there? Perhaps other day tours that leave from Hamilton Island, or beach dives? Again, it's already been booked so liveaboard or alternate places to stay are not an option for this trip.

G'day,
I dived up there from Hamilton Island a Yr ago.. It was through FantaSea.. I traveled with my other half ( who doesn't dive) so this was a better option for "her" I mean both of us.. Haha it was a one day trip, and offered her something to do. Snorkel the reef.. While I dived the reef for most of the day,
Now I wasn't that impressed.... It was ok but I would never do it again nor recommend anyone to do that.. Because it was with such a big company and it was set up on a permanent platform on the reef, 90% around it was dead and there were very limited fish..
I have heard that H20 Dive on Hamilton is ok but never experienced it.. FantaSea was ok if you were taking your kids and family but if u want to dive to reef properly u need to do a live aboard. I know u can't do that.. Hope that was a small help.
