You just have to love this board and the tin horned chest out divers who hang around it. This diver was an established diver of 15 years and had plenty of scuby doo experience. Rebreathers kill and yes because of complacency, so don't you think its time to make a rebreather that's complacency proof. The death tole's are climbing and every season thus far in Ontario we loose one or two and that to many. If a rebreather diver has the ability to forget or mismanage his rebreather there needs to be put in place once and for all a warning system into the unit. example 02 on or 02 off. It may raise the price of the units but for sure will save some fools life.

What we have is a very Darwinian piece of equipment. When we look at rebreather accidents we invariably find acts of stupidity at the heart of the matter. If you think it is better to build a breather that never needs the scrubber changed, or the batteries replaced, well that isn't going to happen.
You initially claimed it was problems with the unit or problems with the training. I say it is neither. I feel bad for the family left behind and I am sorry this person had to die but we all accept certain risks when we dive. Some people feel it is worth the risk to get extra time out of their scrubber, to go deep without bailout, to push the rebreather where OC divers seldom are seen.
If you wish to discuss this further you should drop the name calling and present facts though

A rebreather should NOT be used in a comercial scenario.Did he have a commercial scuba ticket...probably not. He should be tied off and have a tender like the regs call for. IMO SCUBA should NOT be used in a commercial scenario...period To much can go wrong to have a limited air supply.

Might be difficult to film a movie with the dive tender parked up top. :D

Would have been a better choice to use a long line to tow the shark prop and not have a diver(s) in the water at all.
