I dove Halfway Rock last Saturday, for the first time. I have always wanted to see what it was like and boy was it worth the wait. WOW! What an awesome site. Did two tanks there, max 60 feet, water pretty clear and warm. Lots of bugs. Very cool site to dive.

I did come across something odd though. There was a stone ? with rope handles. It looked like 2'x2'x4" chiseled stone something and it had two rope handles. It also had a large hump chiseled into the top. All I could think of was it was a memorial of some sort so I didnt touch it. Anyone have an idea what this is?

Went to Egg Rock for dive #3, a pleaser as usual.

HFW is just a great site. It is definitely one of my favorites as well. You can reach 107' at high tide on the open ocean side of the pinnacle. I usually descend down to this point then circumnavigate the whole thing. There were lots of lobster yesterday as well. I grabbed 4 but 3 were small (by millimeters) and 1 was a female with eggs so none to bring home. My buddy saw a Spiny Dogfish pass over while I was busy coaxing a lobster out of a cave. I did not see it but I have seen lot's of Spiny's there. My last visit there before yesterday (about 3 weeks ago) we came across a Seal as we were steaming back to shore. I have seen Seal's there before actually but never while diving. Always on the surface or while driving away.

It is funny you mention this stone thing. Do you recall what side it was on? Did you see it on the side closest to Boston? I noticed a square "thing" with handles on the side facing Boston and I just dismissed it as a mooring block. I did not look closely at it though. I will have to remember to look for it the next time I am there.

I would say it was on the side facing Marblehead / Boston. Somewhere along that stretch.

Hlafway Rock is one of my favorites also. Do you recall how deep that "rock" was? I'll tru to locate it next time.

I came across the same stone today. I looked at it closely and it appears to be a mooring block. There is a steel bar loop for rope. There was a bump on it but it did not appear to be any sort of sculpture.

Matt,

That was my first thought, but it would probably only be heavy enough for a R/C boat. Maybe we saw different ones because I just remember two rope handles - no steel loop.

I did not touch it but just looked at it from above. It may very well have been rope handles with growth on it but my first thought was a steel loop since rope loops would not be usuable as a mooring and I think this is a mooring block.

Ha ha - maybe we will never know for sure.
