I've been looking at the Halcyon eclipse at my LDS for a while now. One thing that puzzles me is that the wing does not have a pull to dump type valve on the inflater hose.

Is the only way to dump air the lower valve?

I know I'm supposed to stay horizontal, but when you are coming up on a line that's a little tricky, esp for a noob in the water. I'm concerned I won't be able to dump air quickly enough if I need to. Ordinarily, I keep my air in the bc low enough so I have to swim to ascend, so I'm confused on how you handle the wing in that situation.

Or maybe my methods need a review?

Thanks.

I'm not an expert on DIR by any means. However, they say that by pulling on the hose (even though there is a cable inside) you are putting unnecesary stress on the hose and the fittings...creating a weak point. I believe that has some merit to it, however if you don't use it all the time, only occasionally, I don't really see a problem....

The hose to which you are reffering has an inflate and a deflate botton. When your vertical you simply push the deflate botton and it dumps air.

I'm a little bit concerned that they didn't teach you this in the basic OW class!

I didn't even know what a pull dump was until I started reading here (even though my old BC had one)...my only thought was, "What's the point?"

The pull dump is actually not a great idea. You really don't need it and it could cause a complete loss of gas in your BC. You'll be using the dump valve most of the time anyway.

Right. Consider the pull dump to be off limits from now on.

I will begin focusing on the use of the release button, and the lower dump, as soon as I lay my hands on the BC and begin training with it.

Thanks for all the input.

Good choice, you wouldn't want to be one of the thousands of divers who died when they pull dump failed.

I personally know several people who have had their inflator hose come off in their hand when using the pull dump...do a search...you can read a bunch of stories here, I bet. They fail and are completely unnecessary.

Perhaps your friends should learn now to screw it on and inspect it before a dive then.

Well...that's an absolutely brilliant idea. Why didn't I think of that!? You are clearly correct, as usual.

There are plenty of threads here about why pull dumps are useless. I don't want to turn this into another one.
