Hacking RAW w/570IS

I have seen mention of this several times with no explanation unless I missed it. Is there a link or further explanation for this method. I am not asking what RAW is, I know what it is and why it is useful, I am asking how it is done, "hacked," on the 570IS/590IS cameras?

The short version is that chdk is a program download that you put on your media card. You have to run the program when you start the camera (you can set it up to run automatically, I believe) and it basically unlocks features that are already incorporated into the camera's processor - the same basic processor being used across a range of Canon cameras, the cheaper ones just having some features locked out by Canon.

The camera returns to factory settings when powered off, so it's not a permanent "hack" that physically alters your camera.

The 570 is listed as being supported by chdk, but I don't see the 570IS or 590IS. I would think that the 570IS would be though, if the 570 is.

Many thanks for this link. I have been an upset G7 owner for a while, and I refused to go out and buy a G9 just to get the RAW that Canon intentionally left out of the G7. This is fantastic.

The A570is does accept the CHDK hack. Works well, although I am pretty sure my batteries run down faster.

Thanks, just wanted to make sure, putting the magic smoke back into electronic devices has proven reliably challenging to me.

I first heard about CHDK on SB and was a little skeptical, but after looking around on the net, I couldn't find any horror stories or cautions against doing it. I have tried it on my A620 and all the magic smoke stayed inside . I haven't used it a great deal though, mainly because I still need to get the appropriate software to work with RAW images.
