A while back I posted asking questions about the G9. I was ordering a camera for free through a rewards program at my business. I ordered the G9 about 4 weeks ago and have been waiting for it to arrive....package came today and they sent me the Canon G10 instead!!!

I sure am glad I didn't buy the Ikelite housing for the G9 yet. I have been reading up on the G9 to get ready for its arrival. I know the cameras are very similar but was wondering if anyone can tell me any major differences, problems, etc. to watch out for when preparing my G10 for underwater use?

This will be the first UW camera I have used with a battery that has to be charged. I am a little worried about killing the battery on a dive. I have read some reviews, but can't find where anyone estimates the hours of usage I can expect on a battery???

Main problem is I will have to wait till Ikelite gets the G10 housing.:shakehead: I will have to keep using my old setup in the meantime.

Anyone seen any tutorials on the G10 or G9 online?

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Why not just get the Canon housing while you are waiting for the Ikelite one? The one for the G9 works really well and it would be a shame to have to wait. You will probably be able to sell it when the Ikelite one becomes available, or you may decide you like a housing that is a lot smaller and lighter.
Do a search here for G9* to find tons of posts on it.. This particular thread has a lot of content http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/canon-corner/204351-initial-impressions-canon-g9.html

Problem is I have two strobes and a double arm tray for the Ikelite housing that I want to use on the G10. All I need is the actual Ikelite housing to be up and going. I will just have to be patient. I am going to email Ikelite and see if they have an ETA on the housing.

Congratulations on the new camera! I'm looking forward to seeing some pics taken with the G10, so once you finally are able to get a housing for it and you do take some pictures, please share.

I have the G9 setup with dual strobes and Inon glass, and I have been very happy with the progression in the quality of the shots I've been getting. I was actually thinking about buying a backup G9, because if I were to have a problem with my existing G9, then I would be stuck with the Patima housing and lenses, but no camera.

Adrian,

I have seen your threads on your G9 and your pictures are awesome. Actually, I copied your lanyard idea you posted in a thread. I only hope to be able to get some pictures HALF as good as yours. Okay, that was the suck up part :D...but seriously, I do hope that the G10 will give me the tools to take better pictures.

I have started reading the manual...problem is it does not really say anything about how to adjust the camera for taking pictures in RAW format. It only tells you how to turn RAW on. I understand the concept of RAW, but not sure what other parameters, ISO etc. affects the pictures while in RAW. I can't find what to set the camera on when shooting in RAW.

Can anyone who uses the G9 tell me what you have the camera settings on when you shoot RAW?? Just kind of looking for a starting point.

Glen,
Shooting in RAW has no impact on other settings like aperture, exposure, ISO, etc. RAW just preserves the full image the camera gets and allows you to process it later yourself rather than letting the camera decide how to convert it into a JPEG compressed image. It therefore allows you to adjust the color balance, contrast, sharpness, etc in post processing with appropriate imaging software.

You can still create a jpeg as well and use a built in white balance correction for it.

Not meaning to hijack this thread but I've thought of the wisdom of having a backup camera for an expensive housing. How many people do this? or do you just count on being able to buy another of the same model (ebay perhaps) if you flood your camera?

On another forum Ikelite posted that they just received a G10 and were starting to look at the mods for the housing. Personally I think the Patima housing is much nicer.

I can easily do a days diving on my G9 on a single charge. Recently in Palau I forgot to charge it overnight and it died during the night dive on my 2nd day, so during the 10th dive.

I think you can comfortably get 100-150 shots out of a single battery charge, and probably a fair amount more.

I decided to wait for the G10 a few months ago and finally picked one up yesterday. I have just taken a few photos, but I love the feel, and not needing to carry the 5D around. Need to get some more dives in before I think about taking the camera underwater, though ;)

I'm pretty impressed that Canon seems to have managed to make a camera that's an improvement to the G9 in all ways, though! (Well, CMOS would have been nice, but it's not like things got worse in the sensor department, from what I understand.)
