I've removed the thread hijack dealing with the recertification and moved those posts over to the recertification thread... so that we can try to keep focus on what the thread actually is and not have a ton of threads degrading into the same subject being fought on multiple fronts]...

I attempted to post a long thread, but was unable.

I did not read the MHK post. The time frame is concurrent with the time frame that was mentioned (actually, the information that I received was that the class was slightly farther away).

As to Wendy's question, the info came from someone that I trust knows more about the organization (with one or two exceptions) than almost anyone else.

I will not post any other info regarding this subject as I am appartently unqualified. I have no dealings directly with JJ or Andrew G. and have only participated in a few GUE classes.

I sincerely hope that the labors (of creating an OW class) come to fruition.

Cheers, Sherpa

Sherp,

My DIRF class in August was taught by Andrew G. and MHK -- I asked them about OW certs..their reply was, "coming soon".

That being said.....GUE has a grand total of <40 instructors the last time I checked.......so widespread offerings of OW certs is no doubt a long way off.

Butch103 asked: Are new divers aware of the BP and wings?

They are in my course.
My BC lecture includes actual samples of:

May West (CO2 vest)
Horse collar
Stablizer Jacket
OMS IQ-pack
DiveRite backplate and wing.

Relationship between DIR and GUE. DIR pre-dates GUE. GUE was formed by tech/cave diving folks who were not satisfied with tech training standards at other agencies (and probably to make some money). They started with tech and cave training, moved into the rec world wth DIRF, and will eventually be offering an OW cert course.

Here is my repor on the DIRF course for some backround reading (course was $300):

The GUE site will give you background on courses, locations, dates, etc. as well as what is taught at each level and the gear and skill requirements. Click on classroom and then on the course you want:

Fifth Dimension is a bricks and mortar and online scuba shop in the Seattle location owned by Andrew Georgitsis, the training director for GUE. Andrew is probably the most active instructor for GUE, traveling around the world teaching everything from the DIR fundamentals course to the various tech courses.

Enjoy

It took me 3 hours to digest it all. One thread lead to another and another - each full of links and info. After all the tangents, video, products, configurations, etc - I feel like I have a really firm grasp on DIR, GUE, and Equipment. Answered every one of my questions and much more.

Also, as an aside - I'm glad to see that FifthD has a brick and mortar component (per that "other" thread ) <lol>

I'm just not sure if I'm ready to plop down $3-4k to kit up in DIR fashion - yet. But I am quite certain I want to take a DIR-F class, since I can see from your personal story, they will let some things slide and focus on trim, buoyancy, movement skills etc. I'm looking into signing up for class. I'd love to take the class with Andrew.
