Greetings from Vancouver!

Cold water diving, should there be a mandatory introduction even if OW qualified?

Hi there,

I am new to the scubaboard, and have found a wealth of info here, GREAT site (kudo's to the cook). I look forward to getting great advice on tropical travel destinations, as well as giving advice if and when asked, about diving in BC. I am a PADI instructor (non-practicing) and captain a dive charter boat on the weekends. I also co-ordinate services for the bcdiveguide.com. If anyone is looking for more info on BC diving, I'd be happy to help!

I came here looking for great advice on tropical travel AND free plane tickets to tropical places. Then they reeled me in with all the scuba chatter and cool underwater photos. And nary a plane ticket so far. Damn you scubaboard!!!! Damn you!!!!!

Oh, welcome to scubaboard! I think you'll enjoy the heck out of it. And I know everyone will benefit from your experience. :)

Vansterdam...cool.

WELCOME to ScubaBoard!!!
I looked up the URL you gave.
Too many links for a casual look, it's on my favorites list for a return engagement.
Enjoy the ride here, lots of great stuff to keep you distracted, learning, and caught in the middle of everything new in Rec diving...
Well, I hope we keep current with so many active members.

Now for my stock message, which is still under construction:
This is a great place to meet people, talk about diving, and get information on just about any aspect of diving -or other subjects sometimes- that you can think of. Roaming through the forums is great help for me.
Now get wet with us and dive into the forums to ask questions, answer those that you can and even chat with folks about diving dreams and nightmares. ScubaBoard is a great place to spend your required Surface Intervals.
When you post a question, be as sure as you can that it's in the right forum or you'll probably find it moved.
The folks here are passionate about their diving, some about their specialty, so the reading can get very interesting, sometimes very hot.
Don't forget, if you haven't already done it, to fill out you profile as completely as reasonable, it'll save you being asked and having to repeat the information often.
Enjoy!

Dug, Hi. Nice web site, great design.

Just got back from a week on Vancouver Island. I'm glad it's cold water or the dive boats would be rafted together from Port Hardy to Sydney, currents notwithstanding.

Query: is your poll question about giving students a taste of cold water diving even if they don't initially think they'll ever dive anything but the tropics, or does it mean giving separate cold-water specialty training?

Bryan

Yes, in canada. Why would a Texas diver need a cold water intro, and where would they go. But Canada for sure, just because we can!

Being in Seattle coldwater diving is a way of life. But.... I think I could suffer thru in Hawaii or Florida. Just throw on a tank and role in!

The poll is regarding only those divers NOT trained in cold water, but wanting to dive in cold water. Extra gear issues, hood, weights....etc.

In that case, sure, I'd require a workshop or class on the issues, to help a diver learn to cope with the added gear and physical challenges, so as to feel confident. And of course that has the benefit of making it easier for me to lead those divers in the open water, and gives them a relaxed and enjoyable dive, which makes them want to dive again . . .

I just met the naturalist/diver who'll be aboard our Dec/Jan Lindblad voyage to Antarctica. He gets to dive, taking along a camera which feeds monitors onboard. He said it sounded like I was qualified to dive there (coldest water for me has been 39, but he says that's still ten degrees warmer than the pack ice). But, of course, they don't allow guests to dive. Darn.
