hi there!

even though I'm not technically a diver yet, I'm starting lessons soon! so I figured u guys wouldnt kick me out of the forums just yet :) and I have it on good authority that u don't bite!

I grew up in Vanuatu and spent my childhood snorkling, sailing and swimming through the beautiful oceans, reefs and wrecks there. But I never learnt to dive. Dispite a few 'teasers' as I'd call them (short intro dives in along the Queensland coast), it's only ten years on that I'm actually getting my act together and learning. And basically, it's thanks to my boyfriend reminding me that if I dive, it's another excuse to encourage my travel habit! :crafty:

I'm planning on heading up to the Great Barrier Reef in a couple of months, so if anyone can recommend any good, beginner dive sites/islands that would be fantastic. or if I'm asking the wrong crowd, let me know who u'd suggest.

thanks for ur time, joanna!

btw, I forgot to mention, dispite all this - I'm afraid of deep water - is this gonna be the end for me?

Welcome to the board Joanna.

NO!

You should talk to my wife. She went from hating the water to a Dive Master. It takes time. Don't rush it.

Hi there and welcome to ScubaBoard! :dazzler1:

Welcome to the board!

Heya Joanna, welcome to the board!!! Depth is only in your head. With the right equipment, you'll never feel the difference. Most importantly, find an incredible Instructor and you should have no worries at all.. Please keep us updated on your progress, best of luck...

Cheers,
Vickie

Thanks for the votes of confidence! I will definately attempt to find an "incredible instructor" but do they wear a badge to easily identify themselves? *g*

I think I will be sticking to the nice light blue coloured (ie. shallow) water for a while - but actually I think my dislike of deep water springs from a more pronounced and somewhat irrational fear of sharks - which will probably just take time (and again, the incredible instructor) to cure.

like I said before, I really appreciate all the replies, will keep u posted on my sucess!

jo

ps. going for my medical with the dive dr on monday!

Welcome to Scubaboard, Joanna, and best of luck with your training. I actually became a better swimmer after learning to dive. The trepidation over deep water and sharks will wear off in no time.

Howdy!

And welcome to SB - the biggest, the best, the fastest growing, and :D the friendliest!
