Hi all!

Just come back from my first diving trip in Ishigakijima, Japan since getting my PADI OW licence!

I discovered what I really enjoy most: canyon reeef diving. I just loved the swimming through canyons, then up over the top and down the other side - just like an underwater roller-coaster ride in amazing scenery!! To be honest, it was far more fun than the dives spent swimming round a single reef in shallow waters staring at lots of small nemos (not that the fish weren't amazing, its just that small fish don't excite me that much and after 20 minutes I am bored and want to move on!!).

My question is: can readers recommend any great locations in SEAsia/Micronesia/Australia (I live in Japan) for canyon reef diving? Ashigaki was great, the coral was amazing, as were the fish, but the canyons closer to shore are not very deep, maybe around 20m. I would love to swim in deeper coral canyons than that.

Any recommendations very greatfully received!!!

There are some great underwater boulder canyons in the Similans. Boulder City (NE of Similan #1) has some HUGE granite boulders completely submerged forming long ridges. Maximum depth around 35 meter, tops of boulders as shallow as 10 meter.

Sharkfin Reef (close to Boulder City but breaking the surface in places) has some very nice ridges too with a maximum depth of about 35 meter.
