I've been snorkeling in Sting Ray city before and had a good time. Is there a Dive trip that involves a Sting Ray site like that or is there something cooler go see in Grand Caymen? I'll be on a cruise there in late January. Anyone know how the water temp is there then?

Brian

Hi Brian,

Actually, you can get a dive trip to SRC itself. Check out some of the dive ops you read about here and many will list the trips.

It is enjoyable. We tend to add a few pounds to our gear to help stay on the bottom in the shallow water.

Enoy,

you can dive at one of the sting ray sites, but if you'd already done that I'd look into doing some other dives.

I've done both the SRC snorkel (cruise excursion) and the SRC dive - the dive is MUCH better.

Snorkel: 10 boats (or more), 50 people per boat, 2'-3' of water,
absolute craziness (my 9 yr old loved it), maybe 10 minutes of rays
swimming around you legs and a chance to hold one

Dive: 1 boat, 10 or so people, 12' or so of water, DM "lead" rays around
to each diver one by one, your swarmed for a minute or 2 and then
get to watch as they visit the other divers before its your turn again.
Don't wear gloves - feel the top and undersides of the rays, look them in the
eye, very cool.

I did the Dive with OF on their "3-tank safari" dive.

Whether there is anything "cooler" there, just depends on what you're looking for.
Swimming along a 3000' wall at 100' with unlimited viz is pretty dang cool...

I just dove Sting Ray City on August 4th with Sunset House. They go on Tuesdays and Fridays at 1:30pm. The benefit of going with them is that they send a representative from Cathy Church's photo shop to take professional photos of you with the Stingray's and lucky us, the Moray Eel! Under normal circumstances I would never condone the handling of marine life, but in this instance I did, and I am so glad I did. This was my second SRC dive, the first one was 10 years ago. The same frigging Eel was there 10 years ago. It was worth the $65 for the boat trip and only about 8 of us were diving. The pictures were great and it was $30 for the pictures on a CD. We tipped $10 each, so total was $ 170 for two people, with tip and pictures. We also got some great video on our HD camera.

Almost all Sting Ray City boats, including those which service cruise ships, have a professional photographer on board. Cathy is not doing anything unusual.
