Hi, I'm planning a trip to Grand Cayman in Jan or Feb of 2004. How are the conditions then? Is there lots to do for surface intervals? I would like to hear anything that anyone has to say about the Caymans.

I spent a week down there one Feb. It was nothing short of perfect. Great weather and great water temps in the lower 80's. Viz was the normal 100+ ft. We saw it rain once when we were in a Wendy's grabbing a quick bite to eat. It was over in less than 5 minutes. We woke up several mornings to see puddles in hotel parking lot. But we were never once caught up by rain during daylight hours.

The Island is virtually crime free. The police don't even have firearms. The only theiving that takes place is by the tourist themselves.

Have fun...I'll be out at Cat Island in Feb...Can't wait.

As your inquiry appears more appropriately placed under the Caribbean section of our Travel/Locations forum, I have taken the liberty of moving it there.

Best regards.

As the earlier post pointed out, the diving conditions and weather should be excellent.

Grand Cayman is the most properous island in the Caribbean and has first world infrastruture, i.e. outstanding accommodations and good drinking water. This does come at a price as it is probably one of the most expensive islands in the region (especially with the CA converting at 1.25 to 1 USD) It also experiences traffic jams on the West Bay road along 7 mile beach and downtown George Town gets a deluge of cruise boat people.

While it does not have the all night dance clubs of Cancun or the casinos like Aruba, there is sufficient night life to stay entertained.

I was just there in September and even with marginal weather, the diving was still phenominal. I managed to squeeze 15 dives into five days, just couldn't get enough (the last day the weather shut dive ops down). More critters than I've ever seen in one spot. FishEye was the op that I used while there and they were great. So good, I plan to go back again in 2004. Possibly in Feb when I take my nephew for his cert., either there or Roatan, haven't decided which yet.

Unfortunately no casinos, but there seemed to be plenty to do at night. I only made it out at night once, I was just to tired at the end of most of the dive days.

Most restaraunts are very good, but also very expensive. LoneStar makes a nice and inexpensive change of pace.

Enjoy!!!

Hey All!
I've already got some great info on G. Cayman here on SB, but I'm heading out there this Sunday (can't wait!) and looking for last minute info on shore dives. I'll be diving AM boat dives with Fisheye and hoping to do some some afternoon shore dives. I have info on the shore dive spots and I did find a place that does a guided shore dives for about $20.00. That may be my best option as I'm traveling alone. Any info appreciated!

Try the "symetry"- pronounced with a British accent (cemetary for the rest of us) off 7 mile beach for snorkeling...also right outside of town, to the left of the submarine tourist option (as your facing the water) there's a parking lot next to a bar that is called Paradise Bar and Grill that has decent shore diving.

Thanks TD!

These are located together in front of the Eden Rock dive shop in downtown George Town. These both have several cool swim throughs and are fairly swallow (15' to 45'). As there are many people doing these dives, it would probably be pretty easy to hook up with a dive buddy at the dive shop. They also offer guided night dives once or twice a week, so this would fairly cheap (as far as Cayman goes)

There is also the wreck of the Cali a little to the north in downtown. The wreck is all busted up so there is no penetration, but there are lots of fish and critters, with some nice coral heads just to the south all at about 25'. This is in front of Don Fosters main shop, but I heard they recently moved, so I don't know if there is another dive operator there so you may have more difficulty rounding up a buddy on site.

Just South of downtown, the Sunset House has a decent house reef with the statue of Aphrodite. Up on the north end of the island by the Turtle farms in front of Dive Tech is a mini wall. Both of these sites should have plenty of divers around to glom on to another group or pick up a buddy.
