I think that Scared Silly's and Richard's suggestion of St. Croix was a good one, there are lots of topside activities as well as good diving. My memories of the wall dives were "nice, typical Caribbean diving" but the Fredricksted Pier is a truly exceptional shore dive.

You might also consider Curacao, nice combination of topside activities and good diving and they have nice beaches, too.

Have you looked at Hawaii? I don't know where you are located or how far you would have to travel, but it is a beautiful place with lots of topside attractions, as well and good diving that is different from the Caribbean diving.

You may want to double check your info on BDA. You should be able to find much less expensive accommodations. The diving is generally free of currents, relatively shallow and an abundance of wrecks. Makes for a nice family vacation with some diving. Beautiful island and beaches. Nice for nondivers. We stayed at Grotto Bay with rooms around $450 and less when on sale. We also stayed at a rental, part of house with separate entrance, two bdrm, kitchen, water access for $200. There are two good vacation rental websites. Have not used VRBO for BDA, but I found VRBO more expensive than booking through other sites/other methods for GCM.

TKAELIN

can you tell me what websites you used in lieu of VRBO?

My cheap flights for GCM disappeared before I could book however I can get to Bermuda almost for free.

I have never been to Bermuda but it looks lovely. It is not known as a big scuba destination but it is said to have a lot of wrecks but the water is a bit cold. Please post a report if you decide to go there.

Bermuda is a beautiful island to visit. I think of it as a lovely island to visit where you can do some nice diving. I don't think of it as a dive destination. I think I posted a couple trip reports under the Bermuda section. Water is very warm in the summer and there is no diving in the winter months. If you plan to dive multiple days you may want to pick an accommodation close to the dive op you are going to use as there are no rental cars and the primary means of transport are buses and ferries while on the island and taxis from and to the airports.

Thanks everyone.

After reading a bit I won't be heading to Bermuda.

Still looking, probably will end up in Keys or Cayman or both.

I like the idea of big fish so maybe Bahamas as well

Bahamas, best island? Again, safety for spouse (non diver) when we are out diving is important, weather, vis, current, travel time, cost, etc.

HA!!!!!!!!!!!
Will send dive report when I figure it out.
