Hi. I've started to get interested in tech diving. What are some good books that give a good into to tech diving and cover equiptment configurations, etc? Equiptment requirements and selection would be needed also. I'm looking for something that talks about the various systems of gear configuration while giving a little background info.

Gary Gentile wrote a tech diving handbook...is it any good? I've been reading about the DIR system of gear configuration. What are some others? What are their strenghts/weaknesses? I'm looking for different systems so I can decide which is the best. Any other suggested reading? :confused:

IANTD Technical Diving Encyclopedia also a good source of
"tech" information including various gear configurations.

Gary's book is a really good source of info if you are just starting out. However, it is starting to get a little outdated as far as some of the gear configurations go. The DIR book that eric mentioned is good too.
Don't take what you read for the gospel truth. Remember, do what is right for you.

Two other books that help you understand more about Tech Diving from a anecdotal standpoint is The Last Dive by Bernie Chowdbury and Deep Descent (forget the author). Deep Descent contains stories about diving on the Andrea Doria and The Last Dive is about the father & son team (the Rouses) that lost their life diving on the U-Who off the coast of New Jersey.

While neither of these are designed to teach you technical diving, they do give you some appreciation into what goes into that style of diving.

Mike - Yes, I've read Deep Descent. Excellent book.

Brothers & Sisters of Technical Diving,

Deep Descent by Kevin F. McMurray, 2001.
Hardcover - ISBN 0743400623
Paperback - ISBN 0743400631

Amazon.com Hardback = $18.87
Paperback = $11.20

For other technical issues try: www.skin-diver.com. Ask the same question of their customer service people an/or librarian. Also mention E.R. Cross. He wrote the definitive books on the subject in the sixties.
A search of www.google.com comes up with:
