i'm planning a trip with some friends, myself being the only diver. do y'all think coz is a good place to go for both? and we're interested in doing some ocean fishing too.

any recommendations on places to stay? my budget for hotel+airfare (from DC) is $600 for the end of january or beginning of feb.

thanks!

I LOVE Cozumel. I have been there 5 times, without diving. I just got certified and look forward to going back! It's not as wild and crazy as Cancun. Some nights, when no cruiseships are in can be pretty quiet. When several ships are in, the bars are rockin'! But I prefer to have the places half full with people I know than full of drunk cruisers!LOL! The snorkeling is good too (or at least was... not sure if the shallow reefs have perked up since wilma or not). I preferred snorkeling at the shore to the trips out on boats. It seemed too deep to get a good look at things out there.

Are your friends all open-minded adults?LOL! You can go to the "wild side" of the island and get your picture taken next to the "naked beach" sign and check out the photo albums they have collected at Mezcalito's. And be sure to have their super-strong margaritas and Super Shrimp!

There is a lot of info on local lodging at www.cozumelmycozumel.com , especially in the forums. There is also a guy who posts there who does fishing charters, but I forget his name... Gabriel maybe?

Have never been there....but my recommendation would be Barbados. Great place. Yell if you want details.

thanks for the info guys. :)

i would consider barbados, but i have friends flying from LA that are on a budget. i originally wanted to go to curacao or T&C, but coz is more cost-effective.

Been to Coz many times with families where there is only one or two divers. It is cost effective world class diving with plenty to keep non-divers busy.

Coz is great for diving, snorkling, and peace and quiet. (away from the party bars that is.) Playa del Carmen is 12 miles away $10 one way on the 40min. ferry. They have the real good beach hotels. The prices in Playa seem to be a little higher. and very crowded streets.
If you want nice beaches on Coz rent a car take a cooler and head for some of the southern beach Clubs. Many are no charge to sit, get snorkle gear, and play as long as you buy a drink or food every once in a while. Or go to the "wild side" named after the surf not parties. Great stretches of virgin uncrowded beaches or at some of the little cantinas. You can find a stretch of beach there that you will be all alone to do whatever you want.
Yes you can get 1/2 day or full day deep sea fishing charters from Coz.
Double check any resort or hotel if you book on the net. Many resorts will still be closed for repairs but some web sites still are taking reservations for them. Call the hotel to confirm that they will be open. 3 min call to Coz cost me $1.50 from Chicago and it is worth it.
Villablanca hotel is open and the rooms run $60-$100 they are across the street from a small beach and have a pool, 3 kliks from town. Hotel Cozemel also across from water but really no beach is open and is ALL Incl $150-$200 a day and there pool is the biggest on the island. 2 Kliks south of town.
Many in town hotels open but are very basic most with no pools $30-$80 a night.

When we are not diving, we of course take the opporutunity to go out and about. Coz has so much to offer, especially those on a budget! Take a tour of the island, find a beach, snorkel, enjoy the many restaurants, and shopping that is there for those who enjoy it. Cozumel also has many historical points of interest that would perhaps be of interest to your group. Then there is the East side of the island.....I would recommend hiring a tour guide for the day that would be doing the driving....and if you enjoy spirits, don't schedule to dive the next day.....Check out this board and possibly www.cozumelmycozumel, where you will find plenty of info on Cozumel as well. Hoping you enjoy your stay in Cozumel !!! Sue B.

I agree with everyone else. My wife and I (and our children when they still lived at home) have been there many times, and I am the only diver in the group. In fact, the reason I took up diving in the first place is because we decided we liked Cozumel so much we decided to vacation there regularly, and none of use were divers then. I figured that if I were going to be vacationing regularly in one of the world's greatest dive locations, I'd be damned if I would miss out on it. The diving turned out to be so spectacular that it turned into much more than than the annual excursion I had originally intended, and we still love everything else on the island.

In my opinion, you should avoid the all-inclusive places. They may be lots of fun, but they could be anywhere in the world--you would not be experiencing Cozumel. Explore the island. Eat at the many fine restaurants in San Miguel. Meet the people.

One thing no one mentioned is the safety factor. I really don't think there is anything like crime to speak of.

I once spoke with someone who knew someone who had been on the police force for years. He said that they had once arrested a belligerently drunk tourist at night and released him in the morning. That was the only arrest while he was on the force. That is a third hand story, but I don't doubt it. You never even see police except when they are stopping traffic in town to let pedestrians cross the road. The exception to that was the night my son decided to walk the couple miles back to our hotel from downtown late at night. He said four police cars stopped by him during the walk to ask if he was OK. He felt that he was being monitored for safety the entire time.

Compare that to Bonaire, where you are immediately warned upon reaching the island not to leave any valuables unattended in a car or truck.

Oh, I don't think it is quite that pristine. Last year I had about $100 stolen from out of my wallet in my hotel room at night (while we were sleeping!:amazed: ). I suppose it was partially my fault, as I didn't use the lock boxes that the management provided at the lobby desk for valuables (pain in the *** to use:bluthinki ), and it could have been so much worse- my $2000 camera rig was sitting right next to the bed on the same chair that my pants with the wallet was hanging on, but still. Oh well, I will take precautions next time, obviously, and I guess it was cheap tuition in the college of hard knocks. Makes you wonder, though. In case anyone is curious, I did report it to the hotel management, and thats the last I ever heard of it...

Sure, there is some crime, but I don't recall ever hearing of any violent crime there. It's among the safest places to vacation, which is why I chose it the first time I went there. I travel alone a lot, and my travel agent recommended it to me as a safe place for a woman to be able to explore alone.
