I'll try this again.

My friend Tim who's been diving for a couple of years came by today and gave me a box marked Sherwood on it. Inside was a first stage, hose and Classic Sherwood second stage.

Tim bought it three years ago when he was considering getting into Technical Diving and it's been in the box ever since.

Looks like a nice unit and should work well for me.

Tim also gave me a snorkel but we're not sure how useful it will be.

I'll take the Sherwood unit and the Aqualung Octopus with me on Saturday when I have my first CW session and check with my instructor on if this gear is right for me.

Anyone have any experience with Sherwood?

I have great friends. :)

I'm not sure about the Classic, but Sherwood has a reputation for making regulators that are simple, reliable, inexpensive, and comfortable. I have used a number of Bruts, and several of my buddies use higher end Sherwoods. We have for the most part had the same experiences... my club uses Bruts exclusively, and we've had wonderful luck and experiences with them.

Perhaps someone else can tell you more about the Classic :)

Does Sherwood have a website?

I like that
I went to the Sherwood link and the first thing I see is a recall notice....

They are a mid range reg that will do the job for recreational diving, but I would not use them for Tec or deeper stuff.

Used as Hire Regs in alot of places as they are cheap, easy to pull apart and service.

I don't know too much about Sherwood regs in general, although I can say that several of the rental regs that my LDS has are Sherwoods.

If you and your instructor decide that it is an appropriate reg for you, make sure that you get it serviced before you use it. Even if it's never been used before, the fact that it has been sitting in a box for three years means that it needs to be inspected and serviced again, because, among other reasons, the lubrication for the seals may have dried out in that time.

That was really nice of your friend to give you that reg! I hope that it works for you and that you have many happy and safe dives with it!

Them thar bubbles coming out of the first stage are NOT a defect... that's how Sherwood keeps their pressure equalization chamber environmentally "clean".

They are a good little reg and will see you to 130' with no problems whatsoever. AND, even though it has seen little (or no) use, still have it service. there have been spring pressures, etc on them thar O-Rings and it would behoove you to take care of them before they cut loose on you!

Yup. I intend to have the Sherwood and my Aqualung Octopus both checked out before I use them.

I'll have to bring that stuff in anyway because the Aqualung Octopus isn't yet connected to the first stage.

Boy I hope I'm getting this terminology correct. :)

I read the manual for the Sherwood Classic last night and it talks about the little air bubbles coming off the black do-dad on the first stage and that it's normal, and for keeping the unit clean and dry.

I think the Sherwood Classic will work just fine for me.

Yeah, Tim's a good guy. He even bailed my out of jail once some 11 or 12 years ago. Tim's certainly one of my closest friends.

Tim talked to a dive buddy he knows and told him about me. I haven't even had a class yet and this guy has invited me to go diving with them as soon as I get certified. Wow! This is getting fun. :)

I'll be sure to have my equipment tested befor use.
