what it says in the title really.

I want to take my marine life expertise to a new level above my current "ooo theres a fish, Oooo theres a silver thingy"

as there are a milion books out there I'm kinda hopeing you lovely experienced Diver peeps out there could recomend something. Idealy relating to where I dive most (British Isles) obviously reading about fish on the great barrier reef isn't going to help me identify fish under swanage pier. lol :tease:
Having said that I'm interested in all marine life so all recommendations would be useful.

Cheers

Hello,

If you dive in florida/bahama region then you can get the awsome software package by reefnet Reef Series

If your looking for real indepth info then on irc's xnet server join #reefs this is a collection of reef aquariast and they can point you to several of the frequent dr's, books and the like.

Then there's project REEF and the fish count.

I would recommend the series of books published by "IKAN" - a lot are written by Helmut Debelius, but also other authors - they are in depth, highly detailed and well photographed species specific books covering several marine aspects, eg:

Cephalopods A World Guide (Octopuses, Argonauts, Cuttlefish, Squid, Nautilus)
Crustacea Guide of the World (Shrimps, Crabs, Lobsters, Mantis Shrimps, Amphipods)
Nudibranchs and Sea Snails

Those are the ones I have but there are several others. Each individual is covered by a detailed, albeit brief description, and at least one photo - plus there are also some really interesting 'picture stories' from some of the photographers. I highly recommend having a look at them (especially if you are into the small stuff!).

In the BSAC dive magazine they mention that this series is on offer at the moment. The website www.thedivecollection.co.uk lists all the available titles.

Happy reading!

that link was quite helpfull. I think I'm gonna go for the "Great British Marine Animals" for now as that seems to be a good alrounder to get started with, but the "Cephalopods, A World Guide" & "Elasmobranch Guide of the World" have just gon on my Christmas list. In the event that I'm lucky enough to Dive in florida/bahama I'll check out the Reef Series.

thanx again for your input it's appriciated.
