I'm going to the Dominican Republic in March and so far I havn't read anything very appealing about the diving there. We're staying in Cabarete- is it even worth it to dive there? I've read that the best diving is on the northeast side of the island but from what I've read here, nothing sounds that great. Your opinions?

PM me for more info, as I've dove the DR twice last year (Punta Cana & La Romana). La Romana is about the only place in the DR where you will get any sort of decent diving (we actually drove from PC to La Romana to dive there again when staying in PC).

Definitley not like other Caribean destinations due to overfishing and such, but if you wanna get wet, it's not bad.

If you're committed to your trip, then I would recommend not going out of your way for diving there. All the shops we used were incredibly disorganized to the point of "unsafe" at times. The boats were small and rides were long. The only dive site I enjoyed was the wreck of the St. Georges. The reef is not that healty.

The diving is ok..nothing to brag about. I stayed in Cabarete and it was nice. BUT the tides are high, waves are rippers and the winds can pick up quick...not much fun for a diver..but a blast for a wind surfer.

I only did two days of diving...4 dives. After the first dive day...I gave them the benifit of doubt that the second day would be better..I was the most expereinced diver the first day. The second day...hummm

I cancelled the rest of the week's diving good thing I was doing pay as you go......rather explore the land than waste my time under in that location...My wife loved it..she had me for the rest of the week doing shore things...I would highly recommend Eddie tours...for day trips out and about. if it is still available, I would sugest, exploring the 5 waterfalls...a full day exploring the region plus going up 5 waterfalls and coming back down them...way cooler that the diving there...

RUMpunch was good.

Thanks for the input! We're definatly committed to the trip- it's just a quick one-4 nights. But I think we might give some above water sports a try- like windsurfing or kiteboarding. Or maybe take a trip exploring the waterfalls. Anyway, thanks for the input!
