Ken,
I just got back from Cabo and can probably answer any questions you may have. I ended up renting a car as well and recieved a briefing on how to drive in Cabo. One recommendation is if your going to drive get a garmin with Mexico loaded on it. Using a map and driving is tough by yourself. We stayed in San Jose Del Cabo and the only diving to be done is in Cabo San Lucas or Cabo Pulmo (Only during May-Dec). You may find a dive op willing to take you there but they are going to want a larger group to go to make it worth wile. I spent 4 days diving in Cabo during my visit and enjoyed it a great deal.
Water temps where in the mid 60's to 70 deg F. Vis ranged from 30 to 50 feet. I dove the entire time in a 3mm Full Suit (No gloves, No Hood).
Couple of questions:
- Is it worth diving while I am down there?
YES I would recommend you dive while in Cabo
- What is the water temperature going to be like in the first week of April?
See Above
- If we are going to be staying at Pueblo Bonito, could you recommend a dive op?
LAND'S END DIVERS - Recommend diving with Lorena as she is a great guide.
- Is a rental car recommended?
Avoid it if possible but Cab fare was going to run 35 US from San Jose Del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas one way. Check on it shuttles or cabs before renting a car.
Places to Dive
Land's End - Seals, Sting Rays, Guitar Fish, Lobsters, Ship Wreck,
Max depth 69 feet
Pelican Rock - Lots of Marine life
Max depth 65 feet
Sand Falls - Very Cool to see the sand falling to the ocean floor
Max Depth 108 feet
Middle Wall - Saw the Manta Rays on this dive
Max Depth 116 feet
Do you take your own gear? I did and was glad I did that's the reason I spent the money to buy it. Also take a dive light and your camera. Disposables don't work well because the best one I could find is only rated to 50 feet and every dive I went on exceeded that depth. I bought a Sealife DC800 for this reason and was very glad I did because I came home with some great photos.
