A group of friends and I are looking to take a vacation soon to somewhere warm - Cancun perhaps? The problem is none of them are divers and I can't convince any of them to take a course. So the question here is if I book a dive trip how will it work? I'm not going to dive without a buddy but who's going to buddy with me? The DM? How does it work when an odd number of people go on a dive trip?

Our group is sometimes so big we have 3 buddies in a team. I have seen the DM take a buddy himself and I have seen them pair up strangers together.

The DM or captain will buddy you up with someone, another single diver (happens all the time) perhaps a threesome, or with the DM being your buddy....

FYI, not a lot of diving in Cancun, but a 15 minute ride to Cozumel will give you some of the most popular reefs on the planet

Have fun

Don't sweat it...I've done it many times and you are buddied up...or you meet some people over the course. I came back from Curacao and by the end of the week had like 3 or 4 dive buddies to go on a boat or shore dive.

By the way if you go to Cancun you should use Manta Divers...they can also hook you up with a trip to the Cenotes and/or Cozumel (ferry ride).

Have a blast.

This is not such an unusual situtaion, divers looking for buddies happens all the time. I think all you need to do is once you have decided where you are going, contact the dive operators in the area to schedule your diving and tell them you will need a buddy. Most likely you will be either buddied up with another diver who also needs a buddy or the DM or you may end up in a group of 3 but one way or another you will have a buddy. Just don't spring it on them when you show up to do the dives, arrange it beforehand.

Obviously, you need new travel companions.

I have travelled solo a few times, and I have always met another single or joined a pair of buddies. Just make sure to get to know eachother and dive for the comfort level of the least experienced of you, get your communication down and make sure you are both doing the same dive. The nice thing about meetign you buddy at the dock is that you are both in the same boat (pun intended) and you have lots in common because you are both divers. Relax, dont be shy, and have a great time...or send me a first class ticket and I'll be your dive buddy. :eyebrow:

Hey TorontoDive, when are you planning to go? I will be in Cancun 6/7-6/14 without my dive buddy either. so will be "in the same boat". Last year when I dove without my buddy in Costa Rica, it was just a small group and I buddied up with the DM. This year in Curacao I buddied up with a woman from Germany, whose husband was on the boat as a snorkeler. I asked early in the trip about buddies, and it worked out fine.

You got that right ;)

I'll be going in August but the advice here is comforting. My hope would be to get paired up with the DM as this would be my first OW dive after certification and I'd really hate to either a) cut someone else's dive short or b) get in trouble and not have an experienced diver there to help.

Isnt an issue. Ive got the same issue - i dont go on holiday with anyone else that dives. I just book trips and on arrival am either assigned another spare person for a buddy or asked to buddy up with a member of staff or join a pair to dive in a 3.
Its not an issue.

Like others have said; not a problem. You can always three-some, buddy with the DM, or with another single. Just tell the DS before you get on the boat and they'll set you up.
