Just tie the kids to a line, float them on an innertube and make 'em hold a dive flag. :P

I haven't quarry dove since before I went to Jamaica in September, and I get to go this weekend. I'll be busting out the 7mil for this one.

I just did my OW cert. dives at Dutch & I loved it. It was last weekend (6th & 7th) and the viz was great, probably 15' or better! I can't wait to go back. We did 5 dives over those two days including one "just for fun," on Sunday. I was supposed to go this Friday but my buddy couldn't get approval from the wife, sooooo..... My LDS is going on the 21st so I'll get at least one more in before winter...

If the 21st falls through PM me, I'm planning on going to D.S. the 28th. I'm always looking for a buddy to dive the "Quarribean".

We had about 30 foot vis in Key Largo this year.... wasn't as good of vis as I thought it would be. Still, very, very enjoyable diving. Lots to see, and a short boat ride to the dive site.

I really wanted to dive on Monday, but we had no-one to watch the kids. Bummer.

Dang schools! What do they MEAN having days off!!!

30ft in Key Largo? that's pretty bad for there! Last time I was down it was 50+ (I was checking out the Benwood from the surface and saw clear to the bottom)

We were there Monday (8th) and it was pretty good all around except for over by the Hellcat...murky as anything!

Yeah, it was murky when I went over to check it out too. We went there on dive #5, my just for fun dive. It was just me & my instructor. He brought down his video rig & we checked out that & a couple of the other sites. The helicopter & new cabin cruiser, etc... We though it was just because there was a large class leaving the area as we got there & they kicked up the silt... Guess not...

We were actually talking about this a lot this weekend, about the differences between warm and cold water diving. I dive cold water and low viz all the time. It's a pain in many ways. Heavy, clumsy exposure protection, tons of weight, thick hoods, heavy gloves. Heavy gear. Shorter bottom times due to thermal stress. And low viz, although I have to say, I dive in Puget Sound, where there is so much life that you see fun stuff even when you dive with your nose in the bottom.

I have no contempt for people who decide cold water diving isn't for them. But, as everyone else has said above, I'd give it another try in better-fitting gear before you write it off altogether. The biggest reason is that diving is a sport where good skills both make you safer AND make the whole experience more fun, whether you're in warm water or cold. Being comfortable enough in cold water to get out there once a month or so and keep your skills fresh will make your tropical trips far more enjoyable.

One of my regular dive buddies goes up there fairly frequently (his job lends to days off during the week a lot...lucky bugger) told me when I mentioned wanting to see it that it was usually kicked up...we figured that since it was a Monday, and probably enough time since the Sunday crazieness, and not a whole lot of people were there that we'd be able to see it better...we were wrong...Just must be where it's located, of a few guys were there right before us and were walking on the bottom!

The rest of the quarry the viz was pretty good...although we dove through a cloud on the way up to the Cessna...

Soundtracklvr has agreed to look for gear in the spring.... said she would feel better in her own stuff.... so now we have to figure out a way to budget it!

She's said that if she was comfortable with the gear, the visibility wouldn't have been as bad of an issue....

I married a good woman!:D
