I have decided on either or both Habitat Resort or/and Sunset Waters Resort. Me and my DH, 14 days, lots of diving, does not have to be fancy, but not a dump either. Mebbe a week at each place?

Can anyone give me some feedback that is CURRENT. Dang! Those www sites for those places are at least 10 years old. I have read dismal reviews...now am hesitating-but want to go and see some healthy reefs in the Caribbean for a change. I have been there - but years ago.

I'm all for the 24/7 diving - but still need a place for R&R while not underwater.

Tell me what is was like for you, if you have been there?

I've written a number of posts on Habitat and don't feel like retyping all that, but maybe if you have a more specific question?

ScubaBumlet, first I apologize for not directly answering your question. One of my pet peeves is the guys who post not to answer your post, but to tell you you’ve asked the wrong question. And here I am about to do the same thing.

In the interest of full disclosure, I know nothing firsthand -- zero, zip, zilch, nada -- about Habitat. I never have set foot on the premises. OTOH, I know the dive staff at Sunset very well. I’ve made at least 30 dives with them since mid-September. I obviously like them, but I have never stayed there. But back to the story:

Two weeks is a lot of living and both Habitat and Sunset are a 30-minute drive from anything resembling entertainment. All the dive operations I’ve dived with here have something akin to a weekly dive site rotation, and I expect Habitat is no different. The point is that two weeks at any dive operation is more likely to be one week times two.

The dive operations west of Bullenbaai pretty much all dive the same sites. The dive operations east of Bullenbaai pretty much dive all the same sites. AFAIK, The Dive Bus is the only operation that dives both ends of the island (the north, too, on occasion). For boat trips, the magic number seems to be four. If fewer than four divers sign up for any trip, the shop will cancel it without so much as a “by your leave.”

If you’re coming to dive your tooches off, that makes a BIG difference. Night boat dives become a very ‘iffy’ proposition. If you’re coming with a diving “significant other”, you have all you need to night dive any time you take the notion. But don’t rely on any dive shop to provide you the service. Some shops don’t even get to the afternoon dive because not enough divers have signed up.

I harp on this because I’m the kind of idiot who goes on diving binges and makes five and sometime six dives a day (Allah be praised for Nitrox!!!). Boat diving operations in general can’t support that aggressive a schedule and little ticks me off more than a dive shop that ruins my plans for the evening by canceling the night’s festivities just because not enough people want to join me.

True enough, Sunset and Habitat will give you all the tanks you can haul, and they’ll even draw a map so you can find Klein Knip or Oswald’s Drop-Off after dark. And they both have entertaining “house reefs,” but they’re not the only places on the island that pump gas.

Yeah, one week I can see. But if you have two weeks, I would highly recommend you consider taking one week on each end of the island.

I don’t care if the chef is Paul Prudhome or Wolfgang Puck, I’m going to get tired of his stuff after two weeks. At both Sunset and Habitat, your only options are the house restaurant or a local “snack.” If food means anything to you at all, IMO, you’d be better served staying closer to Willemstad, where you can go to KFC or Craving Sushi if the mood strikes.

The other advantage is that you’d get to dive both ends of the island. I have to admit I’m partial to the west end but the east has some excellent dive sites, too. Spend the entire two weeks at either Habitat or Sunset and you’re guaranteed to miss Car Pile, Superior Producer, Tugboat and Klein Curacao, to name but four.

Pick a place in town and you could spend a week driving each morning to, say, Sunset, then the next week driving to Lion’s Dive/OE East.

Or you could spend the second week on Bonaire. ;)

So sorry to upset or to ask 'wrong', that was not my intent. We travel a lot to dive (22+ years). It is just getting harder to find places to go back to and dive when you have been to most. This next time I wanted someplace closer than we normally go, which is below the equator.

Thank you so much T Slim for your frank answer. You told me what I really wanted to know, but was so wrapped up in researching that I asked very poorly. Two weeks is too long...just what I thought, but didn't want to hear.

Thanks again.

I don't think I would want to spend 2 solid weeks at Habitat or Sunset Waters. And I 'd agree splitting your time between Sunset and Habitat wouldn't get you much of a change. If you're going to move, there's something to be said for moving someplace more different. Spending a week at each end of the island is not a bad idea if you haven't been there before. Amounts to one week closer to town and one in the western boonies. Definitely do try to hit the far western dive sites like Alive in Wonderland/Playa Kalki (the shore dive at OE West/Kura Hulanda Lodge) and Watamula (boat dive.)

Habitat will run their morning 2 tank boat with no minimum number of divers. I believe they require 6 to run an afternoon boat but I think there is rarely a problem having enough divers. Ocean Encounters will not guarantee even the morning boat - unlikely to be a problem from their main shop, but was definitely a problem from the OE West shop when we were there.

HERE is my report of our trip to Sunset Waters, diving with Sunset Divers, in April, 2007.

We were there for a week. You can take a shuttlebus into the city at various times. Friends who were there for 2 wks took an excursion around the west end on a day off from diving.

ScubaBumlet, it’s me who should apologize. I didn’t mean you had asked the wrong question, I meant that I was breaking with netiquette by “rewriting” your question. It’s not really much different, IMO, from hijacking a thread. Sorry for the ambiguity.
