Sounds like they want you to sell your soul! Maybe it is just me and my rebel ways but I am all for personal gear selection regardless of the shop. I guess I was lucky enough to do my OW in an organization that does not push any gear. The one piece I did buy on the instructors advice was a nice pair of XL jet fins - not a bad set at all.
