I volunteered to give a talk on cave diving to our local dive club next month.

I think you should videotape the presentation, then post it for the rest of us to watch. :)

(Please, those of you who already do this, I don't need your input . . . we all know that we'll sit for ANYTHING that involves caves.)

Funnily enough, Jamie just did a similar talk last week.

A large part of his talk was dispelling the myths of cave diving, so he used a clip from "Wookey Exposed" that shows UK cave diving (which is in essence dry caving with extended sumps.... oh, that go down to 65m+) which is often what people perceive cave diving to be (squeezing through tiny, mud choked passages). He then followed it up with some Mexico pictures and video.

Certainly the non-cave divers found it very informative.

TSandM,

As someone who has only just completed an NACD cavern cert a few weeks ago, this is why I was interested in getting the training:

1. THE PHOTOS! With 200+ foot vis in springs, caverns (and especially cenotes) look awesome! You need lots of photos;
2. Becoming a better diver. If you aren't moving forward, you might be moving backward;
3. Being challenged by an instructor that doesn't know me - nepotism is not good;
4. Skills are transferable - while a cavern cert will not make me a wreck diver, it might help with some aspect of wreck diving. It might make me a better photographer. It might make me a better dive buddy; and
5. Did I mention the photos of cenotes? :)

Describe the moment that made your jaw drop in a cavern for the first time

Talk about how the training and interaction with divers in training and experienced has influenced you and your diving, for me diving with other divers that did their rescue course and dive master course was great becasue they were fellow avid divers

What to expect in training for this and why it encouraged you

Describe the scope of this, where you think someone should be in their diving, some of the myths associated with it, some people might think caves and see diving in something like a sewer or smaller for size, space inside caves can be huge to tight

Okay, you sold me on this, where do I go now to get some experience as an intro

If I was to go to a presentation about cave diving (and I honestly wish I could see this one!) I would want to hear about what equipment I would be using in the cave that is different from what I already use as as a recreational diver, as well, what level of diving skill I should expect to be at before I start to think about training. It would be nice to be able to leave the lecture knowing if this is a goal to be working towards or if its something that I can sign up for today.

It would also be nice to hear about the true risks involved as well as hear some of the common myths that are floating around.

I would also like hearing about some of the skills that would be taught during a cave course. I wouldn't expect you to teach the skills but rather I would like to hear what procedures/skills would be taught and why they are important (sounds like it might tie in with the "dangers of the sport" portion well)

Thats my Wish List, Hope it helps you :D

Is there a Ew! Aghk! Getting creepy! Is there an I am ready to barf emoticon out there?

No disrespect TSandM, but this is... I know - lets turn Saspotato loose on them!

LOL
Jeepers! I don't mean to be like..... :admin: ..... :auto: ..... :shower: ..... :anonymous2: ..... well, creepy! I just haven't seen a presentation online or in person before that would include that sort of information and thought it would be good to hear since it sounds like it is intended for divers with my level of certification. This is an area that I was hoping to continue into sometime in the future :-)
